Starting First Thing

My 1991 400ls with 400,000miles, on the first start in the morning it takes about 10 seconds for it to catch, is this normal or is there a fuel return valve ( or something) which is weak

That is some mileage!

It should fire up within 3 seconds. It's difficult to tell what the problem could be. Worth checking the state of the plugs/leads etc. before looking at the fuel system.

Could be the coil wearing too. But like Collin the Barbarian says, do the basics first before you jump into the deep end !

Thanks for the replies, I will look into it, It only does that if it has been sitting for more than a day, after that 2/3 seconds is all it takes.

My local Lexus dealer where I bought it said that when the previous owner purchased it from them new he was intending to keep it for 2 years, he kept for 12 years. They worked out that he spent £65,000 on servicing, £78,000 on fuel plus the price of the car £40,000, total is £183,000, over 12 years is £15,250 per year. I bought the car for £2,000 a year ago & it drives like a dream.
