Viscous Fan

Hi,

Im new to Lexus and just got a 92 LS400. The fan on the front seems to make a loud noise when u rev the engine?? I dont know if this is normal! When u push the fan round with your finger it offers resistance

Love the car.. just has a few minor niggles

Just had a trawl round a few sites n forums and it seems like my fan had bitten the dust! Will it be ok without it? or where can i get a new one from? or how easy is it to stick a lecky one in its place?

Help!!!!!!

mine's got a lecky one anyway, so perhaps it is easy to do, but it was on there before i bought it, so can't help i'm afraid!

be carefull when remvoing this as I think it shares the same fluid as your power steering.

Does your fan all the time or is it thermo controlled?

Conversion looks simple enuff just not sure where the thermoswitch is for the fan thats already infront of the rad... or where to fit a new one???

my guess isthat someone took off the viscos one, and the car just runs on the 'over temp' one, but it's not on all the time. i'll have a look and see if there's any clues in the engine compartment.

i have had a look at mine it has a blade missin and it so noisey so im taking it off... does yours run ok on the over temp one? how far up the gauge do the need go before it cuts in? infact mine is generating so much air it blows your hair back when u lift the bonnet LOL besides the massive amount of roar when u rev the engine!!!

lop off the exactly opposite blade to balance the fan!

my temp runs at exactly midway, but i'm not sure temp is reading right cos the cluster is suffering from the early stages of PSU probs.

ill take lot off n price a new one up from lexus...

if its cheap enuff ill stick 1 on.. they will love me there...

had to call them to find where parking brake was ?DOH!

well new fan and coupling is over 300 quid.. so of it came!!! car now feels so much better.. much much quieter and pickup is better too

temp is fine... i was reading the stock fan takes over 9% of your power and thatit can go as high as 30% when the viscous clutch siezes.. wow live n learn!!

guess we'll have to wait til the summer to see if the lecky fan can keep the temp down! meanwhile, enjoy the cold weather!

I was going to post the other day that I don't think a new fan would be cheap :o You may want to source one from a breakers or try and fit another electric fan.

I think im going to fit an electric fan... A guy on the US forum may have the OEM fan n clutch for sale so ill have a wait n see if he has still got it and how much!!

well now ive removed the fan... the electric one cuts in now when the temp gauge is bang on halfway.... so you can remove the viscous power sapping fan and the electric on will come in when needed... how this copes in summer I dont know.... but its fine when im stuck on m1 stood still for 30 mins!!!

shipping's a bit high, but fan may be cheap - they may also have a coupling to suit.
