Diff seal and transmission gasket

Hi there.

I need to replace the left side diff seal as it’s leaking. This will be done by a mechanic/workshop. Would it be good practice to replace the right side seal at the same time?

Secondly the transmission pan gasket needs replacing as that also has a leak. Would the transmission fluid need to be replaced with this?

Thanks in advance

I believe it's considered good practice to do both. Certainly if the right side is of the same age, and hasn't been replaced recently, then I'd get it done, if for no other reason than peace of mind.

As for the transmission pan gasket, then yes,  given that the oil needs to be drained before removing the pan, then it would need to be replaced. It's no bad thing to put fresh transmission fluid in, especially if it hasn't been changed in a while. Also, if yours has a filter, it would make sense to replace that at the same time.

Thanks for the reply.

Is the trans filter located away from the transmission pan? In terms of labour cost savings - would there be much savings doing it at the same time?

No the filter or “oil strainer” as Lexus call it is mounted below the valve body so is accessed by removing the sump pan.

IIRC and according to the diagram there is no separate gasket for the sump pan they use a special liquid gasket (FIGGS or something like that) which has to be applied using a specific method.
