In all the time I have been on various Toyota forums, i don't recall anyone looking for a diff unit due to failure. However there is a MK 1 GS very near to me that has had a failure. It has got the large rear sport wheels so maybe that has something to do with it. I thought the drive train was pretty much bomb proof unless someone can tell me different.

Got me pondering now, i've got the 10" rears, but i definately don't want my diff to go, it does make clicky noises as you turn the rear wheel in one dirrection constantly... hope this isn't the first signs

That clicky noise if you have one wheel jacked up may just be because it has a LSD fitted... I think. Im sure someone will be along soon.

I noticed the one on eBay. If it was the same one, i think it was from a Vertex TT but may be mistaken. It was at 99 pence with no bids when I last looked and it didn't have long to go.

I'm starting to get really suspicious of my diff/drive shaft linkage, sometimes when engaging reverse usually when parked on a hill i get a large click noise from the back of the car, is it possible that the drive shaft link has come lose or warn?

There are no issues with Mk1 diffs. They should last the life of the car. The only time they will "normally" :whistling: get a problem is if the oil level is low in the diff itself and it is driven like that for a while. The bigger rear wheels don't have any adverse effect on the diff as it is over engineered to cope with a lot more power.
