hi all,

i have been given a mountain bike that has a threadless headset, the problem is the handlebars are far too low for me, and as you cant adjust the height of the bars ( because its a threadless headset) I would like to know what my options are?

i suppose it means getting a normal set of threaded set of forks? can i keep the original races etc??

or can u get long headset forks and then use a spacer tube?

any help appreciated.

rob.

you can use spacers under the stem

a higher angled stem

or riser bars

threadless headsets are far superior to the old threaded ones, so try and keep it if possible, i doubt if you could use parts from either with each other as they are different sizes in diameter

If you have spacers over the stem they can be placed below the stem (some bikes are supplied with the steerer left uncut to allow this) - if not as Bazza says it's a different angled stem or risers ...

Oh - and don't use bar ends with risers - it's naff !!

thanks for that Barry, i think its a 1" stem, have to measure it, i have seen some higher angled stems but it means i am leaning forward more, i had a look for risers but couldnt seem to find any!? am i correct in thinking a riser bar is just a piece of tube a few " long that bolts to the steering stem and goes straight up?

the bike was free, there are no names on it ( no its not stolen) and i only ride it in and out of town so dont want anything expensive, so do have any links of the riser bars?

many thanks

rob.

You can get riser tubes as you mention - really is a bodge though - risers and handle bars with ... well .. a rise - think cow-horn handle bars ...

Will try to find some links ...
