Guys

When the cruising range on the GS300 sat nav screen reads "low fuel" how many miles/litre of fuel are left in the tank ?

Cheers

don't worry about it. Carry a plastic can of fuel! :winky:

It may be on a screen but it's still a gauge, or to put it basically a rough guide. Every single one Lexus build will be different. The only way for you to get an idea is to carry a can of petrol and let it run out, even then if you did it again with more weight in the car and on different roads it would vary. I'd guess it would give you 25 /30 miles, but it could be 10 or 50

Mate,

It's generally imagined that when low fuel light comes on, you have approximately 2 gallons of fuel left. If I fill up when the fuel light comes on, then it's nowhere near the FULL tank capacity as specified in the handbook.

Personally, don't let the tank get too low, otherwise all the dirt and sediment at the bottom of the tank gets sucked into the engine.

the range calibrates itself based on the mileage you have just done on a tank.

e.g. If I fill up and get a range of 280 miles, I then use the fuel getting the cruising range down to 0 and fill up again I get a new range of the mileage I have just covered, say 275 miles. If I then use up the fuel again, let the crusing range get down to 0 (now covered around 270 miles) and then drive for another 40 miles when I fill up the new range is 310 miles.

Basically the range (and the mpg figures) are inaccurate.

Dirt and sediment should sink to the bottom of the tank, and that's where the fuel pick up is. That's why the fuel filter is inbetween the tank and engine.

I did think the range was inaccurate, I have come from a e46 325 BM to a GS300 and the range readout on the BM is constantly updating the range figure, so if you are easy on the gas the range figure goes up and down if you are pushing on.

The MPG on the GS is crap compared to the BM which had a 6 cylinder engine also.

I seem to be visiting the petrol station a lot more than I am used to, the best average MPG I have had in the GS is 27 and that was taking it rather easy on the motorway.

I am yet to fill the GS to the brim so dont know what it will take to fill it and how many miles I will get from a completely filled tank.

What can I expect from the above ?

I dont know if I am regretting buying a Lexus  and wonder how long I will keep it for.

I really do like it but just wish it was a bit cheaper to run. :(

Someone tell me I shouldn't be regretting buying my GS !!!!!!

Mate,

My sympathies..I have the same car..

The 3 litre engine you have is rather thirsty given the weight of the car and power output, when compared with other cars.

The biggest advantage you have over Beemers, Mercs and Audis is how exclusive your sport model is. A 5 series or E class may be a nicer car to drive, but they are everywhere now. Plus, you have bulletproof reliability. Boring I know, but that's a big thing in everyday life!!!

Was your old beemer manual or auto? Any auto will drink a lot more than a manual...

Oh, you might wanna try upgrading to a GS430. It's got the awesome V8 in it, and fuel consumption isn't that much more than the GS300, so more vroom for your cash...

Maneesh cheers for the reply, had a manual Beemer, I know what you mean on the rarity of the Sport models, I haven't seen another one yet on the road and come to think of it I've only seen 2 other GS's in the 3 weeks I've had it and I see Audis, BM's, Merc's every single day.

I may look into going down the LPG route if I can make it pay for its self.

The mrs has a 1 series diesel and gets 52 to the gallon which makes me a bit sick. :D .

Having said all of the above the GS would leave my old 325 for dead performance wise.

So I suppose its swings and roundabouts when you look at it like that.

Dude, you can't go comparing a GS300 Sport to a 1 series diesel in terms of fuel economy. Chalk and cheese. :duh:

To be honest, if you wanted a biggish car with amazing economy, you are best off getting a Mondeo TDCi 130 or a Vectra 1.9 CDTi 150 (but manual, the auto versions are pants). I've driven so many modern diesels, and quite frankly they only shine when cruising on motorways. That's where the GS makes life comfy, it's effortless to drive it around town.

I considered buying a 2 year old Mundano, which would have been far more economical to run, than a 7 year old GS. However, a Lexus really pampers you, it makes you feel special. Don't you just love the looks on passenger's faces when they see the steering wheel retract once pulling the key out?

I find it's all the small things that make the GS a pleasure to own. The Xenon lights are wonderful, the engine is creamy smooth, the gearbox shifts well, the speedo dials are cool, and the centre armrest is just so comfy and well placed. Best of all, it's got excellent cupholders - what more do you need in life??? :D

Not too sure Lexus and LPG go together well. Haven't heard of many conversions. Someone else on here might be able to help.

How many miles a year do u normally do?

I do approx 400 a week mainly to and back to work on the motorway and a bit of town driving at the weekends.

I've always had decent performance cars so I suppose I should no better then to worry about the GS being heavy. I went thru a spate of having jap imports starting at a GTI-R, then a GT4 Celica, Sti version 5 so running them on super used to hit the pocket quite a bit and I moddfied most of them mainly the Sti.

Out of interest do you know the Lexus colour name for my car, its the silver pearl colour.

Cheers Jon

Jon,

Hmm, the GS's economy is crappy on motorways. No offence, but you might want to consider something like a Vectra GSi. Seriously, the 2002 onwards cars are pretty good for the money. It might suit you more if your motorway journeys continue.

My mate got a year old for 11k, with low miles and came with xenons, sat nav, leccy seats etc. They are very quiet and smooth at cruise, and the thrust of the V6 is lovely. He got something like 37mpg driving at a steady 60mph, and he's got the autobox!!! Servicing is £120.

That policeman got clocked doing 159 test driving his new GSi...

I would have got one, but they didn't have leccy steering wheel when you take the key out ...LOL
