Hi Folks! I wonder if anyone can help on this one. These ccld mornings on first pulling away I find that the engine of my 1996 Mk1 GS will rev. ok but the car won't move at more than a snails pace. It only lasts for a very short time but never noticed it happening last year and it's caused a few problems just lately when pulling out into traffic! Everything's fine after about fifty yards. I've checked the oil level in the box and that seems up to the mark. The car's done 110 thousand. Very grateful for any advice - as long as it's not spend big bucks!!

Hi Derek, don,t worry about taking off the sump, it is simple. Don't disconnect any pipes,

remove sump and let the car stand for an hr or so and let the oil drain out

when you take off the filter more oil will come out and wait for that to stop ( make sure dust and dirt around - must be clean)

wash out your filter and stick a new gasket or O ring on

replace the sump and top up your oil with at least 3 or 4 ltrs

start the car

let it idle for 3 min( make sure handbrake is on)

select reverse and check your oil level

select park and top up if necessary

repeat process for all gears

once the level is correct road test the car changing the gears manually eg 1st 2nd 3rd to drive

drive for approx 20 min for oil to get to correct temperature

check level

total job 20 min to repair

1/2 and hr to drive :)

finally check for any leaks and your job is done

I hope this works for you

Terry

That procedure will only replace 1/3 of the fluid. It is fine if you do it every year or so to keep the fluid fresh however if you need to replace all of it you have to disconnect pipes etc.

UPDATE....

called to collect the ATF.... wrong stuff ! says Toyota type T, not T-IV

he said he would check and get back to me, which he did in about ten minutes..

correct stuff now on order, but a bit of a price difference....... oh yeah ! nearly fell off me chair :o

About £95 for 10 litres, compared to the £30 ish for 8 litres of type T.. :(

Oh well... she has to have it...

Oh, and I got the pink coolant, 8 litres for £66 ish

Also, when changing the ATF, would there be anything wrong in dropping the fluid in the sump, (2.0L) then starting the engine and emptying the rest... including disconnecing the cooler pipes and draining those..... will it damage the tranny?

Hi don't start the engine,If u drop the sump u will get most of your oil but u should let it stand for 20 mins.If u don't have 20mins,then remove the oil filter. TERRY :o

From everything I have read, including the manuals and workshop manual, you will only get around 2L of ATF out of the sump..

Starting the engine will pump more out... I was just wondering if this would cause any damage..

John

Hi, yes it will cause damage to your oil pump.It drives off the engine, and would run dry in seconds,All your oil is in the torque converter and clutch drums, and the only way to drain it ,is to just let it run.time is the way.The torque con on older models had a drain plug, but i don't think yours has.DON'T RUN YOUR ENGINE.TERRY
