Hi guys looking for some serious help here - my car has been off the road for 5 weeks with some serious electrical problems. Started off with some scary shaking at low revs (turned out to be coils - six brand new ones in!) now there is no acceleration - we have taken the throttle body off and tested it and all appears to be fine there. tested all sensors (MAP included) and all appear to be fine it has been to auto electrician, local mechanic, and now Toyota!! noonce can seem to work out what is wrong! any help appreciated

the light wasnt coming on originally but apparently it is now. i have an altezza as200 which is apparently the same as an is200. just had a call from the mechanics this morning and they tried replacing the ecu which fixed it for a short period of time but it still isnt running properly - they reckon it might have something to do with the VVTi. the car is standard - only mods i've done is aftermarket stereo and alarm which where both professionally installed

I would find someone that knows what thay are testing, as you car dont have a MAP sensor mate :winky:

Check your cats are ok, as this can stop you car from accelerating

AS200 has the 1G-FE engine, same as the IS200, so MAP sensor is correct!

any idea what could cause these faults?

The throttle control motor is an electric motor that opens the throttle and lets you accelerate, its controlled by the ecu from imputs from your right foot, as this is your symptom and the fault codes show a fault with it I would have a stab at guessing that maybe the motor has stopped working or there is an electrical fault between the throttle pedal and the ecu, and its not opening the throttle......!!?!?!??!

Try changing the motor and see what happens, or have the wireing checked for continuity......

Good Luck

Pete

the fault codes are apparently P1125 and P1128 does that ring any bells with anyone?
Look here: Fault codes thread

P1125 Throttle Control Motor Circuit Malfunction

P1128 Throttle Control Motor Lock Malfunction

rings only one bell to me though!

Throttle control motor?

they've completed tested throttle body and tried a new ecu but still no go and now apparently think it could be something to do with the VVTi

Seriously mate, if you aint gonna listen when people help you whats the point in even asking?

The throttle BODY is different to the throttle MOTOR!

The IS has a electronic throttle as well as mechanical input, working together. And as Haylands said the throttle MOTOR is on the side of the throttle BODY.

Hey i dont know if they have checked that fuse but i presume they have but will check it out anyway. the throttle control motor has already been tested three times and is apparently working fine. the car is now running but still quite sick they have finally been able to take a snapshot on the engine data and are looking at that at the moment. so to the best of my knowledge the throttle control motor is fine but i will check with them again about that.

It's not working fine if it's throwing up fault codes!

Just had a chat to Toyota and they are adamant that the Throttle Control Motor is working and that I need to replace the throttle body but are quoting $4500 to fix it!!! any thoughts?

also why are they adamant?

Have they physically looked at the car or just what your telling them over the phone/through email?

yeah they have the car at their workshop - i went in on saturday for a chat and they have tried several things but nothing seems to work and they think that replacing the entire throttle body is the only way to get it going. the car is running but just wont accelerate properly. the only problem with that solution is they have bench tested the throttle body and it appears to be working yet for some reason the signal is not getting through to properly accelerate so it feels like your driving a tractor when you drive it because its so slow to pick up speed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just been talking to Toyota and they have apparently resolved the problem. The screws that control the idling levels were apparently fiddled with by someone, and the exhaust was blocked up due to the engine having been running so badly. They have cleared that out and put the screws back to the original factory positions and it is apparently running as good as gold now!! :P
