Water Pump Change...

Hi guys,

I recently had my water pump changed along with my cambelt and other bits. I bought a big bottle of Toyota coolant pre-mixed and I was wondering how much is needed to refill the car when the water pump is changed? It seems the guy that did it only put half the bottle in? Is that right? Or may he have mixed the pre-mixed coolant with more water? If so what should I do?

Coolant capacity is 7.1 litres see Here so that would be give or take how much should have gone in.

Is there any coolant in the reservoir? It is possible to do a water pump without draining all the coolant off, though I would take the opportunity to flush the system and change it anyway.

So the guy could have changed the water pump and only lost a bit of coolant? How much coolant would you think would have been needed to replace? Before it went in the coolant looked quite new. What would happen if I didn't flush the coolant?

If you blocked the radiator hose maybe about 3 litres to top up. If the coolant was clear then not really a problem, the idea of flushing is to clear any residue out of the system.

your IS200 should only have coolant in it, water can react with the alloy in the cooling system parts and cause corrosion. after having your water pump changed, the tech should have ran your vehilce up to operating temperature and checked for leaks and correct operation of the fans etc. after this is all ok the vehicle should be left to cool down and the coolant level checked via the header tank on the radiator.- topped up if neccessary.
