Squeaky Parcel Shelf When It's Hot Weather

Recommended Posts

I've had my MK3 GS300 for a couple of months now, when the weather is hot ( I know, rare in the UK) say above 20C the rear parcel shelf squeaks/rattles like crazy when driving around.

Lexus have just given me the car back after having it for 2 days to try to find and fix this problem. typically the weather was poor and they couldnt hear or find the issue. they have no problems having it back in again to look but I wondered if anyone else has had this problem and knows what's causing it?

Cheers guys

Hello,

At last someone else who has this problem, I went to Lexus with this and they could help but at a price, in the end it was an easy fix which I solved

The first thing is, is that it is not your parcel shelf squeaking. Sit someone in the back and they will tell you it is in fact the rear window. When Lexus put in the rear window at the factory location clips were left in.

It is these that start to expand and rub and cause squeaking when it gets hot. The noise is like rubbing 2 balloons together.

The fix is to take out the rear window and take out the clips. The problem is that this will be expensive and more so if the window breaks.

My cure, and it works as I have no squeaking since I did it, is to buy a tin of silicon spray, not WD40 as this is smelly, (try Halfords).

Carefully put the spray nozzle under the roof lining near the rear window and gently spray along. Do not saturate and be careful not to crease the roof lining! Enough spray is when you start to get a few runs on the window, wipe this away and your'e done!

I did this after the window started squeaking, but since spraying silicon spray I haven't heard a squeak for weeks!

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks for the info :)

could you post a pic of where to squirt? im trying to visualise but im not coming up with anything useful in my head !!!

I will take a pic tonight but I shall try to describe too.

1- Sit in your back seat, turn 180 deg and face the rear windscreen.

2- Look up and you will see the roof lining, you can fit your fingers under it and feel the screen.

3- Gently take the roof lining and pull down, not too much, just enough for the spray nozzle and be careful not to crease the lining.

4- Take the silicon spray, attach the tube to the nozzle ( the tin of spray should come with a tube attachment).

5- Spray along the window up under the lining. Spray the full length of the rear windscreen, the amount needed is more judgement than anything.

This should work but you'll need to go out in the sun to try, if it still squeaks just spray more. I only had to spray it once and it cured the noise. :D
