Big Problems With My Is200 Helpppp Please

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am having an issue where my IS200 cuts off while I am driving and I have to leave it off for about 10-15 mins before it will start and when it does start the engine light comes on. Any ideas?

I have got the throttle body cleaned, the Battery changed and all the hoses checked for coolant. Every single time it goes to the garage they are adamant they have fixed it and low and behold it happens again. When it cuts off and I try to start it it starts for a split second then cuts off again. Once ive left it for the 10 - 15 mins it starts again with the engine light on. Today when I got it back from the mechanic it seemed fine and while I was at the car wash I decided to put on the headlights and the engine immediately cut off and wouldnt start up again for about 10 - 15 mins.

Please help and any ideas would be appreciated

thanks

Jason

Hello jason,i notice you have only recently joined here,if this is possibly because youve also just bought your is200 ie youve only had it a week or so i would consider your options before you spend loads of money :-

1- if you bought it from a trader phone them immediately and ask THEM to rectify the problem.

2- if you bought it in a private sale it may be worth a call to the former owner to ask if they had knowledge or experience of this fault prior to selling it to you-they would probably deny all knowledge but you never know they might be able to advise you or offer you some money back towards the cost of repairs.

let us know how you get on

I took it to the garage and they said the code points to coil 5 but they tested it and their is no misfiring. I have had the car for almost a year now. The previous owner said they have never experienced this before. everywhere i call tells me it is the crank sensor so I have left it with a japanese specialist mechanic to see if he can have a look at it and tell me what the problem is, if anyone does have any ideas please let me know

took it to the garage and it came up with a code that says it is the Crank Sensor. I am in a dilemma now as 1 garage says they are getting a code for a coil and 1 garage says they are getting a code for the crank sensor, also a few places seem to think from the description of the problem it is the crank sensor. Anyone know if a Crank Sensor going wrong can cause this problem?

the garage that said they came up with the coil code says they tested the cylinders and all of them were firing correctly and there was no misfire so they did not know why it came up with the code.

Advice pleasseee, I am losing hope

hello mate,it sounds a bit like your garage may not be giving you the best service.

i would try and take your car to a lexus dealer who may if you ask them really nicely give you a better idea of what the problem is.

I might be wrong and am happy to be corrected but i think its hard for the other members to suggest a course of action for you to fix the problem because they are asking for codes -

I think any reputable garage plugs a poorly lex into a machine and that machine gives codes or numbers out which identify areas of concern,

you saying youve been told crank sensor is not a CODE and codes are quite important because they are very specific, you may even have a number of fault codes-you need to list them all for these guys to be able to really help you i think-ask your garage to print them out for you or at least write them down

If your garage cannot give you the actual error code/s - change garage

(im happy to be corrected)

im sure them codes will get you a response.

if it was me i would drive to a lexus main dealer tomorrow even if you are skint-go in with a polite attitude and who knows you may be able to chat them up to plug it on a machine for free-explain that independant garages cant seem to help you-from my experience which is limited the lexus chaps are quite proud of themselves and want you to be happy-just ask them to do a free estimate to fix your car

havent changed the cambelt recently, why?

i like the advice of taking it to a lexus dealership, I am just worried about it cutting off on the motorway

what is the going price for a crank sensor or is that only obtainable from lexus?

i will have to also find out how much a coil is

Get a coil from www.japarts.co.uk for £50 pattern and £98.36 genuine

Crank sensor could try above or local Lexus Dealer

lexynik i have aa cover but i am more worried about the car shutting off at motorway speeds, it wasnt a nice experience at a roundabout, motorway speeds could be worse as no breaks or power steering all of a sudden, i guess i could ask aa to take the car to lexus

rob is it easy to swap the coils around and would a faulty coil cause this problem?

mattc thanks for the sight, will get a coil from there, no crank sensor though, how much should i be paying for a crank sensor, called lexus milton keynes and keep getting promised a call back so never even got a quote and i called them about 10 times today, im not having much luck but appreicate all you guys help to get to the bottom of this

the garage that say it is the crank sensor want £124 for the sensor and £45 labour, is that a fair price you think?

yup if you have relay ask them to take your car to lexus, why havent you called them when you broke down ? i would imagine they would have a code reader.

Id be more worried about getting the car home if you find lexus give you a price to fix thats too much money for you-however you could push it off the forecourt and ask aa to take you home again.

Make sure you have the relay part of cover and i think you get 3 callouts a year or something similar without a premium increase

i do have the relay cover, i have never asked them to take the car to lexus when i have broke down as i know it takes 10 mins and will start again, i should have called them really, never knew they have code readers, have the aa always had that?

i get 5 callouts a year with the aa, i even have breakdown repair cover that covers me up to £500 for parts and labour if it is a mechanical fault. the only thing is my cover is new and that part of the cover kicks in after 2 weeks

do you know what the crank sensors job is?

i wouldnt hold my breath on the aa carrying the parts to fix your car or obtaining them and then fitting them when they get them(unless its a new service i havent heard of) but they may do if as you say you wait for that part of your cover to kick in before you report this fault.

I had a mooch about on eBay last nite for you and couldnt see a cheap crank sensor anywhere-but if youve got a breakers yard near you phone around and see if theres a lexus being stripped and if you can get there buy a 2nd hand crank sensor and a coil pack- in my opinion 2nd hand parts like these arent worth much unless you know and trust the guy you buy off-coil packs fail on all cars on a regular basis, the crank sensor in my experience fails less often but can still go-so try and pay next to nothing for either of these parts from a scrappers, although this could fix your car it might not as 2nd hand parts could be faulty.

The guys on here can post a link to the manual on the is200 so you get a clue what parts are where or its on here somewhere if you search.

You could have anything from a loose wire, blown fuse upwards to cause a fault like you describe- coil packs can come and go sometimes but its rare for them to start working again once they go wrong-coil packs also sometimes give off a burning smell when theyre going or gone-so if youve noticed a funny burning smell when youve opened the bonnet that could be a clue.

a coil pack failing is going to give you a misfire.

a crank sensor failing would most likely stop your car

a loose wire to the crank sensor or a bad connection would probably cause the problems you describe.

ALL THESE IDEAS ARE JUST ME RAMBLING REALLY-I AM NOT A MECHANIC SO PLEASE DO NOT SPEND ANY MONEY ON ANYTHING WITHOUT CHECKING WITH A MECHANIC as i cant be held responsible !!
