Gents,

is there any way of making the gearbox smoother?

currently i find it fairly rigid to change gears... from 1st all the way to 4th..and its annoying.

im aware of the clunk in the 2nd (which is annoying as it is).. but is there anything that can be done to smooth out the gear changes?

ps. i changed the gearbox oil about 2 months ago.

thanks in adv

Izzy

Shortshifter- it shortens the gear change.

Best ones are the B&M ones or if you have the £££ TRD do them as well (think you need to import the TRD one direct from Japan?).

What oil did you put in it?

Don't think a short shifter will make it any smoother. I've got a TRD in mine & it's good but putting Redline MT-90 in the box made the biggest difference.

There's a rubber bush that the bottom of the shifter sits in, that supposedly wears out over time. A Japanese tuning company (Beatrush) make replacement brass ones. Could be worth a look http://z4.invisionfr...showtopic=10206

Maybe you have to be a member to view that thread. This is what the bush looks like

Wasn't having any issues before I put the MT-90 in. Just felt what was in there was feeling a bit old & I wanted something fully synthetic.

The difference after putting it in was very noticeable. Shifts were much smother. 1st-2nd went in with ease. It had been a bit of a pain at times. I also notice a huge reduction in drag, lifting of the gas at 100kph/62mph the car no longer slowed down as quickly.

hi mate

thanks for the info - i will be purchasing either the MT-90 or the Silkolene SILKTRAN SYN 5 75W-90

unfortunatley mt 90 is only sold in quantities of 1 x US Quart (0.946L) - 2 litres is required for the gearbox.. so unfortunately even buying x 2 that will not be enough :-(

whereas silkolene comes in 1ltr so x2 will suffice.

thoughts/advice?

cheers

You only need 1.95L for the diff according to the Lexus spec sheet I have. 2 US QT = 1.9L I'm sure 5ml ain't going to make much difference. I only put 2QT in mine anyway.

The Silkolene SILKTRAN is GL5 so I wouldn't be using it. The only other GL4 75w90 I've found is Amsoil MTG. You could use Castrol EP 80W or Motul Gear MB 80W if you're on a budget & only want mineral oil.
