Ls430 Steering Column Alternatives

Recommended Posts

My LS430 refused to unlock the steering lock the other day and so it had to be recovered to the Lexus dealership where they advised me that I would need a new steering column assembly and a new steering lock assembly. As they have not seen a problem like this before they have advised that a used part will be more than good enough to replace the old one but they are mighty hard to source. Does anyone know if the steering column from any other model will fit the LS430 or where I can locate a used steering column for a LS430? Please someone help..... :duh:

Normally it is just the lock which causes the problem when the plunger fails to disengage and replacing the steering lock normally provides the cure but we are talking Lexus here. Please don't be offended as I assume you and the dealer have tried this but have you put the key in the lock and gently wobbled the steering wheel whilst trying to turn the key?.

I have looked at the LS430 part numbers and the last of the LS400 series and none of the part numbers match so we can assume they are different.

There were also 3 types of steering column fitted to the LS430 and you would need to get the correct replacement.

45250-50172 08/2001 to 07/2002

45250-50172 08/2002 to 08/2002

45250-50173 08/2002 to production end

The LS430 uses the Smart Key system not used on the LS400 models which would confirm they are not interchangeable.

As you say getting a second hand replacement is not going to be easy there are many internet breakers where you can enquire for specific parts, but you need to ensure it is the correct one, also bear in mind if you do find a suitable part if the vehicle has been involved in a frontal impact there may be damage to the column.

The steering column can be fully disassembled and all the individual parts are obtainable so it may be more cost effective to remove the column and find a steering specialist who may be able to repair your own column.

Finally welcome to the LOC :D

Thanks for the reply, I have a 2000 plate which was the crossover year so I am assuming that the 2001-2002 part number will be the one. The car is currently at the dealership who, I amazed to say, have been very friendly, helpful and not a fraction of the cost I was expecting. I have given them instruction to srtip the steering column down so check and replace bushes and motors that have stopped working whilst I am also looking for a spare online. Even the service manager is asking through the trade to try and help source used parts. As I have told them it is a works car so needs to work not be all shiney and new. As you suggested though parts are very hard to find! Any good suggestions for used lexus parts suppliers would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I am a new member and read your post.

I have had a LS430 for 5 years now 2001 plate and have had the exact same problem. I had it taken to dealer to fix and as expected was very expensive £1,600 for a new steering lock column.I have just picked it back up this weekend and is as good as new.The only alternative the dealer gave me was a bodge up job, change the car or fix it properly which is what I chose although expensive. They said that this has never happened anywhere before so I was supprised to read your post.

But one of the benefits of LOC membership. Hope you make use of the facilities and enjoy your memebership.

Have a play with the search facility and have a look at some of the other forums eg audio.
