Just wondering if this is possible or am i being stupid? Just so they come on when the engine is running and thats it. thanks

Yes, perfectly possible. They take very little current and the power can be picked up from what the ignition switch makes live when switched on. Check the wiring diagram on this site - http://bahamutcars.free.fr/workshop/IS_98-05/menu_tree.html
