Combined Brake Master Cylinder And Abs/esp Module

Recommended Posts

Honest John has updated his page on the Mk2 GS recently, to include a warning that the combined brake master cylinder and ABS/ESP module can fail in 10-12 year old cars, and the replacement pasrt is expensive enough to make the car an economic write-off.

Does anyone here know anything about this? Just wondering, like...

Worth noting that it affects various models from 28/9/04 to 9/12/05. The VOSA recall does, however, state that this can occur if the incorrect brake fluid is used.

I think HJ is talking about an electrical component, not the brake fluid leak? 10-12 year old cars would have been made in 2000-2002.

Can't think of anything else it could be, except possibly the failure of the brake master cylinder/servo in some pre facelift Mk 2 GS 300's. Rectified in 2001 f/lift by fitting bigger master cylinder.

There's a module in the abs / esp system which frequently fails on VW, Skoda etc... Teves Mk60 ESP/ABS pump control module. I thought it might be the Lexus [or whoever actually makes it] version of that?

On the good side, I've googled a fair bit, and seen next to nothing about it for Lexuses. You wouldn't want to have a german car, though!

Unlike most car braking systems that use a vacuum servo for power assistance the GS300 uses a high pressure nitrogen accumulator and pump to supply the required braking effort and the ABS/traction control is also integrated.

The system is fully electronically controlled and from what I remember is not a serviceable unit apart from as below.

If the accumulator has failed you can now get them repaired with new seals and pressurised by the owner of the Soarer Sanctuary ( Steve Smiffie)) for around £120.00 exchange.

If your brakes are working correctly and there are no warning lights on I wouldn't worry unless a problem occurs.

The link below explains what's what on diagnostics.

They also seemed to fail if the Battery was disconnected for a long period.

You will know if it fails as all the brake warning lights and VSC lights will illuminate and a high pitched whistling is emitted as an audio warning. You wont miss it at all.
