I have a is200 and few days ago i drove 50 miles and the car over heated and flued leaked so i took it to a garage to be told its my head gasket and it would cost 700-800 uros to put right ,he also removed the thermostat in order to get me back to were i was going .

the car has gone to a garage local to me and the polish guys say it my be only the thermostat witch i gather wont cost that much ???

in the event that it is head gasket , what would be a right price to pay ? he also wants to do the timing belt should he need to replace it ?

Hi robbie although i dont know the prices of fitting a new head gasket you can maybe take the chance on the cheaper option by just having a new thermostat fitted and see if the engine will hold together. but if not then head gasket will be the way....

Also check the coolant pressure cap, there have been issues with these causing the problem you have.

You really need to confirm a failed headgasket before you start having the engine stripped either by doing a cylinder compression test or better still a cylinder leak down test, any decent garage should be able to do these.

Have a look in the oil filler cap for signs of oil/water mixing it looks like mayonaise.

Finally amother test is to insert the emissions exhaust probe used on MOTs ( NVT I think you have) into the space above the coolant, but not actually in the coolant whilst the engine is running and this should detect exhaust gases in the coolant confirming a HG problem.
