Gs 300 Remote Central Locking Problem

i have a 1997 GS300 which until recently has given me no problems, this is my first Lexus i've had it for only one year. what happened was the remote stopped unlocking and locking, i changed the batteries in both remotes with no sucsess on solving the problem, next i took it to a mechanic friend who got the spare of the two remotes to work which has subsequently failed again, for me to get into the car now i have to use the key to open the door which sets the alarm off for 30 seconds although when i get out of the car and remove the key the alarm does'nt go off and i lock with the key. any sugestions most appreciated apart from matches and petrol thanks.

try sitting in the car, remove the Battery from the fob and press the button for 30 seconds. Put the Battery back in and see if it now works.
