As a matter of interest, have you checked that your insurance is still valid? - It would appear that some insurance companies will charge an additional premium if you change wheels and/or tyres and not advising them may result in invalidating your insurance.

Bloody insurance-idiots to charge more for added safety. It's the complete opposite here in Europe, if you have an accident in snow-ice (your fault or not) with summer-tires, they can refuse coverage.

If you get stuck in the snow with summertires, you get a fine by the police.

With the current weather trends, I suspect that the tyre industry will soon be banging on about rainy season tyres in addition to snow tyres and summer tyres. Sure enough, this will be followed up by windy season tyres, wet leave tyres and very slightly damp tyres.

Someone mentioned telling the insurers about what tyres are fitted to ones car. I wonder when they will start to find ways of imposing penalties on car owners for making claims whilst driving cars which are shod with weather inappropriate tyres. I remember the days when there were just 2 types of tyre: those with enough tread and those without enough tread.

I can remember those days also, mine were the tyres with less than enough tread usually. In days of old in never never land, I could only just afford the payments for the second hand car, tyres! pphhh, they were a luxury, that were only changed as a last resort and then usually on borrowed money. Then, almost too late, I learnt the secret of life, a better education. It worked for me, half as much work, twice or more as much pay, now I can afford a Lexus, a story that will bring back memories to many, I bet.

In Italy it is obligatory to wear snow tyres between November and the end of March, needless to say most people do not use them, and the bill are not normally very good at their job, so it is pretty safe. I have been undecided on which tyres to get for Mr. Jingles, but will have a set for next winter. I have Winter and Summer tyres for my Subaru and use that when I leave my local area and head for the mountains, or Switzerland, the Swiss police are more capable shall we say, they also track one down to issue the fine.

With all the rain this year I was thinking of building a raft powered by Mr. Jingles, steered by water jet, no prop or rudder to snag, also to incorporate a track just in case it encountered terra firma. The track would be available in Winter or Summer versions.

Michael.

I have never understood tyre choices in the UK, cannot see any reason why all cars in this country shouldn't have All Season tyres as standard, we must be the most appropriate place for them! Our summers are never overly wonderful, it can be rainy and crap at any point in the year, the winters can be snowy but invariably are not that bad for that long.
