Rx300Se Intermittent Problem With Cruise Control Switch

Recommended Posts

I would be interested to hear if anyone has experienced the following problem with their cruise control switch similar to the fault I have on my RX300SE.

I have owned my RX300SE with an 03 Plate from new and as I am retired have only covered 55000k miles resulting in relatively little use over the last ten years.

I find that whenever the interior of the car becomes hot especially from periods of prolonged sun my Cruise Control switch will not activate the circuit and bring the green light on the instrument display when first moving off. This can be very frustrating as you may imagine and it can be several minutes/miles before the cruise switch connects the circuit and enables the control to work. Usually I find the switch will only start working after the interior has cooled down with the climate control set at a cool temperature.

My local Lexus dealer in Poole have indicated no previous examples of this fault. I am wondering whether the fault lies within the contacts of the switch being affected by the cabin heat causing the switch components to expand and thereby not making contact once a fairly high temperature is reached. Conversely in dull/cool summer weather and /or during the winter months this problem never arises.

My obvious solution would be a replacement switch but I am wondering whether any one has a less expensive suggestion that might cure my cruise control switch fault?

Apologies for my rather long description. I am new to this forum!

Not a problem I've heard of before. It sounds like a loose connection or a bad solder joint within the switch, loom, or ECU.

You really need to use a multimeter/scope to find the fault. When it isn't working I would check the voltages at the switch and/or the ECU to see if the switch is operating correctly.

Alternatively as a first attempt just try reseating the connectors if you don't have a meter.

Many thanks Colin for your quick response to my problem. I will probably discuss your suggestions with my local Lexus dealer as the technology involved would be beyond my capability. Nevertheless your suggestions are most helpful and may avoid a more costly solution! Thanks once again.

to me it sounds more like a bad connection or an issue within the ECU

or does the car have to exceed a certain speed before the cruise can be activated

have the dealers actually seen the fault, tried an alternative stalk to see if it cures the issue

i use my cruise as often as i can, but dont turn it on till i require it
