  1. Probably not as they are probably different size. Best bet is to replace the existing head unit with a single din fascia adapter and then get a single din head unit with dvd screen etc with Sat Nav. This is what I plan to do with mine sometime this year. PM Tigerfish as he is the electronics guru on here and has done this on a Mk1 car.
  2. Kev Have you tried disconnecting the battery to reset the ecu's. There is an ecu that controls the locking. You may also need a new battery in your alarm/key fob. This usually works for me. It may just be the cold weather, I went to use my GS on Boxing Day after a couple of days standing idle and it was dead. I jump started it and it has been fine since but then the temperature has gone up a few degrees recently. My stereo system and central locking have played up on occasion when it has been very cold. Failing that you may need a new central locking module. If you can bear with me I will dig out my workshop manual and see what the trouble shooting tips identify as possible causes. Keith
  3. Not sure if this is the right place for this but here goes anyway. I have a Mk1 GS that I am refurbing and would like to get the windows mildly tinted. I got a quote from Vampiretints for £290 which seems high. Does anyone know of anywhere else in SE London I can try or would recommend.
  4. Tom Try changing the PS fluid. I had a similar problem and this helped mine. Have a look at the fluid in the resevoir and smell it. If it is not red/pink colour and smells burnt it will benefit from being changed. The squeeling noise I had turned out to be part of the exhaust heat shield touching moving parts of a front wheel somewhere. I was convinced my ps pump had failed but was proven very wrong. The ps pump is pretty bomb proof and its really only the bearings that go and my mechanic tells me that they can be rebuilt at a cost far less than a replacement.
  5. I remember reading a while ago that it was still possible to get a faceplate adapter to enable replacement of the standard radio cassette with a single din head unit. I think 'Monster Mat' posted some part numbers but I can't seem to find the post in the archives. I have searched the net and only seem to be able to find them for a left hand drive car. Has anyone done this, i'd like to use the existing speakers etc. Any help would be appreciated
  6. Thanks for the replies. It turned out that my boxes were ok but the curved inlet pipe on both was holed. The metal is quite thick so I got them plug welded and plated for £30 for both so should last another couple of years! What I did learn though is that aftermarket rear boxes need the inlet pipe modifying or a new piece of curved pipe welded in and are therefore not worth buying as this will treble the overall cost. When mine finally go I am going to remove them and just have some straight pipe with the chrome tips fitted to look as standard as they are just there to quieten the exhaust note and nothing more. I wanted a more 'rorty' exhaust note any way.
  7. My rear exhaust silencer boxes have just given up the ghost and I need to replace them. It's not worth fitting Lexus replacements due to the age of the car so I am looking for a pair of aftermarket ones that perhaps give a more sporty exhaust note. I don't want huge tail pipe outlets and would like something discreet. Does anyone have any ideas as to where to look for replacements. I have seen some stainless ones on Ebay which are between 23 and 25 inches overall length with a 2.5 inch inlet pipe. Can anyone advise me if these will fit or let me know where I may get some at a sensible price. Thanks
  8. wow300 - if you are parting your car I would be interested in the roof spoiler. Do you still have it and what would your price be. Thanks Keith
  9. My power steering squeels like a goodun on near full lock both left and right but is fine in a straight line with no loss of PAS. It has been sounding a bit odd for a while and got better after I replaced the aux drive belt. I have checked the front brakes and the cambelt and tensioner and it is nothing to do with either. I have also checked the power steering fluid reservoir and there is no loss of fluid and the level is as it should be. What I did notice was that the fluid is no longer reddish in colour and has a sort of faint burnt smell to it. I suspect that the fluid may be deteriorating so I would like to replace it but don't have any idea where to look for the drain plug. Does anyone know if this is a straightforward DIY job or would it be best entrusted to a mechanic. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks
  10. Just a quick question - how many cats does the Mk1 GS have? I am likely to nee some new exhaust parts but can't find any suppliers of parts at sensible prices. Can anyone advise of suitable exhaust parts suppliers. Thanks Keith
  11. Try TDI (Torque Developments International) I got my lowering springs from them a few years back. They do still list some tuning parts for the MK1 GS. Grilles are hard to come by that have not been damaged when removed by breakers. I have had a couple and they have both been minus the centre fixing which causes the grille to bow when it gets hot in the summer. I have not seen anyone selling aftermarket ones for a few years now. As for the Sport alloys these are really getting scarce, though the TRD painted ones are still available but If I remember correctly only in the standard width and not the 10" optional rears.
  12. Hey Paul Glad to hear you are still around in a Lexus. There are a few of us oldies still around - the kitchen hob you fitted for me is still going strong by the way! Now if your Soarer was a V8 I may be tempted!
  13. Hi If you don't get a reply I may be able to help if your query is regarding sport alloys or centre caps etc.
  14. As Tigerfish says, HID's are not so good for high beam as there is a delay in them coming on 'cause they need time to warm up. I ended up going for very bright white (Xenon like very similar to HiD colour I have in dipped beams)uprated bulbs. My HiD kit did start to play up and I had both ballasts fail intermittently. Not to bad after nearly 5 years use, but easily replaced for cheap money. I do still have the original bulbs though!
  15. Not sure about whats provided as standard but if you can have a hands free phone hard wired you must be able to get an Ipod connected somehow. My young son has a cassette adapter that he uses in his Clio that he plugs his Ipod into to play back through his stereo.
  16. Hi - What year is your car? I have a 1995 Mk1 GS and the remote locking and alarm setting is by way of a single button on the master key. Sounds like you have just the valet key. Getting hold of blank master keys for the Mk1 is becomming very difficult and I am not sure if Lexus even reprogram them these days. You could try replacing all the locks and the locking and alarm ECU from a breaker. I have seen these offered as a set by specialist breakers who know what needs doing say when you loose keys.
  17. Very nice and a good fit by the looks of it. Nice looking car and colour too. If I went for one though think I would prefer the same tail pipe as the original rather than the round ones.
  18. Hi - not sure about re-mapping ECU's but I have it on good authority if you have an early Mk1 GS you can get more BHP by fitting and engine ECU from a late 1997 car.
  19. Yes found Tigerfish's link - very helpful. Before I start to pull things apart I am assuming the shifter surround at the centre console is back lit with the light coming on with the interior lights. I only get the light that identifys the gear that has been selected. Am I correct - if so where will I find the bulbs? My workshop manual makes no reference at all to any backlighting.
  20. Can someone post the link on how to change the bulbs that light the gear selector markings beside the gear lever in the centre console. I can't seem to find a reference in the archive. Thanks
  21. Hi The 10" rears look like these (pic without tyres) and the standard wheel as the other pic
  22. There is a tutorial in the archives somewhere on this IIRC. I think there is a particular way to do it without damaging the outer lens.
