Unfortunately the problem is most likely to be within the LCD unit. Lexus Carlisle sent my HiFI away to a company in Bradfor to replace the LCD unit. I do not know the company name, but a call to Carlisle Lexus would probably get you the name & phone number. Taking the Hifi out of the console is not too difficult. But I would not want to take the unit apart.

I have recently noticed a metallic sounding rattle from under the car somewhere. I asked the dealer to have a look, but they could not find anything loose. It seems worse when reversing up a hill. Any ideas? By the way the sound proofing must be good as I only noticed it because the window was open! Now I know its there I can't forget about it.

Paint Code
JCC replied to newport's topic in Lexus GS 300 / Lexus GS 250 / Lexus GS 430 / Lexus 450h / Lexus GS 460 Club
Alloy wheels are generally not painted. They are powder coated. This gives a much tougher finish. I have tried touching in the chips etc with silver paint, but it never looks right. Usually there is a layer of white corrosinon on the surface where the coating has been that needs to be cleaned off. You will also need to prime the alloy before you paint it and you need to get a good 'seal' with the original coating otherwise the alloy corrodes and the paint lifts. You can get your wheels refurbished. They grit blast the wheels and powder coat them. I think it costs about £50 per wheel. -
You need to remember that it is illegal to show red or maroon lights at the front, because it confuses people and they think its the back of the car! The police tend to ignore bluish lights at the front, but will pull you over for red ones! The LED lights are not street legal, so you would need to replace the originals for an MOT.

By the way you have 3.0 SE 4d Auto GS Saloon (1993 on) down as both group 15 and group 17. Also I was quoted group 17 for insurance for my SE and believed it was group 15/16 only to be told that these are only guides and that an individual insurance companies could put a car in any group of their choosing and charge what they like!

I have my tyres at 37psi all round as a compromise for economy and comfort. If the pressure is too low the side walls flex a lot and generate a lot of heat from wasted energy, which is why they suggest higher pressures for high speeds. Also the higher the pressure, within reason, makes the sidewalls less flexible so the car should float less when cornering hard.

Air Conditioning

I could not find the recirulated ventilation inlet in the passenger footwell or any reference to it in the handbook, so I contacted Lexus and got this message: Dear Mr Carpenter I have spoken to the technical department. I have been informed that the recirculated air intake on the 1999 GS 300 is behind the glove box. If I can be of any further help or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind Regards, Tim Cayless Lexus (GB) Customer Account Manager 0845 278 8888 So it is on the passenger side, but not one of the vents that you can see. I think that the best bet is to remove the filter housing blanking panel in the glovebox beneath the CD player and spray the de-ordoriser behing the filter or even take the filter out and spray it in directly. Parking Sensors
JCC replied to kmartin's topic in Lexus GS 300 / Lexus GS 250 / Lexus GS 430 / Lexus 450h / Lexus GS 460 Club
How much use is the parking sensor? I thought about fitting one, but the spec on most systems says from about 1.5m down to 30cm. It seems that the spacing between the sensors limits the short distance range because they only 'see' across 120 degrees, so you get gaps in the coverage at shorter distances. I usually need to get closer than that when parking, like within 5cm. -
Wheels And Tyres
JCC replied to jac114's topic in Lexus GS 300 / Lexus GS 250 / Lexus GS 430 / Lexus 450h / Lexus GS 460 Club
You need to get the rolling circumference (the distance travelled in one revolution of the wheel) about the same for the different combinations. You can work out the circumference as follows (diameter of wheel & tyre) * 3.142 the diameter of the wheel is the size eg 18", to this you need to add twice the height of the tyre. The aspect ratio is the 55 bit or 45 or whatever and is a percentage of the width (the 225 or 235 bit). However the width is in mm. So a 225/55 tyre has walls 123.75mm high and a 235/45 tyre has walls105.75mm high. The difference is about 18mm or 3/4" so you would get a 1" bigger wheel to keep the speedo about the same. Roughly speaking a 225/55/16 is about the same as a 235/45/17 combination.
