Cannot believe i have done this. Engine codes 13 and 25 (see other posting). I was planning to replace disis and rotas as im sure they wont have been done. NS disi and rota off and both shot. Sensor wire worn through as well which is probably the cause of the fault codes. While undoing the bottom 8mm bolt that holds the OS Disi cap on, the spanner slipped down past the timing belt. It cannot stay there for obvious reasons. If I cannot get this out with a magnet tomorrow, does anyone have a suggestion for getting it out. Any suggestion really appreciated. Couldnt be more hacked off.

Thats brilliant. and thank for the tips. We managed to get back under our own steam. Engine management light on all the way and a few missfires, mostly on the over run and up hills. Only 2 accidents in front of us on the A14 added 4 hours to the journey. At work now but will try the paper clip later. My gut feeling is weak ignition not igniting all the fuel. Tip for all Lexus owners: dont transport 4 young geese in your Lexus, over 320 miles, for 9 and a half hours on the hottest day of the year.

Exhaust Flages
sir john replied to Rusky40's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
Ive thought about fitting new flanges to mine but the practicalities of getting it all to line up stops me doing it. A teporary fix is to clean them up with a wire brush and fit new gaskets (£4.11 each) and some exhaust gum or 2 part metal putty. Mine are so shot that the heads of nuts and bolts rusted off completely and the flanges are rusted through in places. The fix tends to last a couple of months before the gum breaks up and falls out. Hope that helps. -
i got within 5 miles of my destination (315 miles from home) when the engine missfired. One of those you feel through the car like its just stopped for a split second. The petrol light had been on for about 10 miles. Straight round to Tescos for a fill up. Standard fuel not the premium stuff. Within a mile or 2 the engine management light came on. When i got to where i am staying it was still on. Engine turned off and then straight back on again and no engine management light. Since then its been coming on after a mile or 2 and staying on. Its also misfired a handfull of times. Again, quite big sudden missfires. Any ideas? Im thinking of a trip to halfords for some Redex until i can get home and check all the ignition components.

Alarm Beep
sir john replied to lewis's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
Thanks for that little nugget of info. It has really bugged me for the last 18 months or so since I got my MK IV that there was no audible alert to tell you the car had locked like I had on my MK II. :tsktsk: I just went outside and tried holding down the lock button but still no beep, then I remembered the little button under the boot release lever. The beep only sounds if the button is pressed in. I am now a happy bunny, thank you. :D Redsteve. No problem. I find that one of the best parts of owning an LS is that every so often you find out something new about it. I remember being made up when someone on here told me about the 3rd sun visor! Little things please little minds and all that... I couldnt agree more David. I have a little thing that pleases the wife no end. unfortunately its my credit card. unfortunat -
this has only just started happening today. Every time i turn the ignition off there is a beening noise. It doesnt matter if the engine has been running or not. Its quite loud and follows the same pattern or rytham each time. "bip bip bip bip....bip bip bip bip .....bip bip bip bip .....bip bip bip bip. then it stops. Ive checked that everything is switch off. any ideas guys.

Parts Prices
sir john replied to JellyBean's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
You should try buying parts for a mitsubishi. The fuel pump on my wifes shogun pinin 2.0 is £800 and its the size of a fag packet. -
Ive had my LS400 for about 20 months but i havent noticed this before. Except for when the wheel is fully extended outwards and at its lowest lateratal possition, the wheel will rock up and down. It takes a bit of pushing and pulling with one hand at 12 oclock and the other 6 oclock but it rocks about 4 or 5 mm. It doent have any play side to side. Is this amount of play normal. In which case it wont be an MOT failure. Or is it something that needs fixing. I want to keep the car and convert it to LPG but i have to wiegh up weather or not it is cast effective. Mainly because it also needs a OSF ball joint and 3 new wheel bearings plus maybe a couple of bushes at the rear and replacement cats and mid exhaust section because teh flanges have gone..

oh you lucky thing - i cant even tell when im doin 120 since i removed the speedo and clocks cos they gave off a terrifying and blinding red glow at night !! still all fixed now but i do seem to be getting a lot of tickets to do with goin too fast for some reason Mate down the pub told me, the tickets are for information only. If you already know you were speeding, you dont have to do anything about them. Thats what i was told anyway.

Ls 400 Starter
sir john replied to ROYT's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
You`re a hero for persevering. 15 years or so back i had a Talbot Rancho with the 1442cc Simca engine. My son and i had to change the engine for one from the scrappers. The alternator kept catching on the slam pannel were the bonnet shuts every time we tried to lower the engine into the engine bay. So we removed the alternator and dropped the new engine into place. Connected everything up, clutch, gearbox, exhaust etc. Then found that the Frenchies hadnt left enough room to get the alternator back on. Brilliant. Everthing back off the engine. Engine mounting unbolted. Trolley jack under to lift engine so we could get the alternator back on. I know there isnt much room to work on our Lexus` but look on the bright side. At least we dont have to drive a Talbot. Bet my starter motor goes next week! -
Caps And Arms
sir john replied to sd1v8driver's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
I wasnt aware that the LS400 had Dissi caps and Rota arms. I thought mine had electronic ignition. I note that sd1v8drivers car is a jap import. Are they different to the UK cars? Mine has a slight miss fire at tickover and 1800 rpm. If mine has dissis and Rota arms ill change them. -
A friend of mine has a Jaguar XK8. He was telling me that he adds Wynnes oil additive to his cars engine oil. He says that it refreshes all the engine oil seals and makes his engine quieter as well. Im planning use it in my LS. Mainly to freshen up the 16 year old engine seals. It might help with the tappet noise. PS. my friend has worked in the motor industry for 20 odd years on the techi side. including Jaguar and Bentley.

Suspention Upgrade
sir john replied to Jefflex's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
There was a thread about this a few months ago. Someone had fitted coilovers and said they were great. It must be on here somewhere so worth a search. -
That could also be a sign of the fanbelt is getting a bit loose, mine sounded like a tensioner bearing going till I changed the belt (which looked ok but was a good few inches longer than the new one, so dont go by looks). So be a good idea just to swap the belt, just for the sake of it. Its an easy enough job, probably take 20 - 30 minutes, just make a diagram of the way the belt goes before you take it off as its a head scratcher to figure it out after! Then you can waggle the water pump to see if there is any play and replace it before it gives up if there is. Try the idler and tensioner bearings as well, just to put your mind at rest. BTW got mine from lexuspartsdirect.co.uk for £43 inc P&P. Thanks for your thoughts. Ill take a look at the fan belt. Was it the water pump that you got for £43 or the fan belt?

it may have been a false alarm. I left the car in the garage to cool down. About 2 hours later i fired it up again. No nasty vapours or water so it might have just been the standing around for over a week that did it. In answer to Alan and Steve. There is no mayonnaise in the filller cap. I dont know when the water pump was last changed but im guessing it was some time in the summer of 93 in Japan. ie never. I guess ill just keep an eye on the water levels and get the expansion tank sniffed next week. Thanks guys.
