  1. my airconditioning's not working, and a guy who was going to contact me hasn't, so i thought i'd try to get the climate control screen fixed soon, so that i could at least check the self diagnostic system, which i understand displays codes on the screen. maria, i think you have a new UK source of supply for RHD 1990 cars screens? how much is it, including labour to remove, repair and refit, and how soon could you do it?
  2. in park, ignition on, engine running or not, set steering wheel, wing mirrors, seat position, seat belt height, and headrest position. hold down 'SET' and also press '1' and hold it briefly until you hear the tone. then put the other driver in the seat, and re-set wheel, seats, mirrors, etc., then hold down 'SET' and press '2' as above. then get back into the seat and press '1', and eveything should go back to your chosen positions. (on mine, the driver mirror goes skywards, so i wait til the other settings have finished adjusting, then stab the mirror adjust button, which stops the mirror, then i reset the mirror position, but as the car's 14 years old, i haven't tried too hard to find the little glitch!) hope this helps.
  3. the long answers is.... at slow speed the calliper floats in and out as the warped disc goes around and the pads follow it, but as the speed picks up, the mass of the calliper can't float in and out so easily, thus allowing the pads to push the pistons further into the calliper. this continues until the pads are barely kissing the high spots of the disc as it whizzes past. thats why when discs are warped, the brake pedal travels further to bring the brakes on. short answer...... cos it does!
  4. has this suddenly become the standard forum version of 'slag off the previous poster'???
  5. is it there at low speed but disappears above 20 or so? if so, how about a warped disc and the brake pad catches and clunks the calliper in it's housing? once speed picks up, pads move further away, so it stops.
  6. thank you, so where is the EECS then?? near fuel tank, exhaust, throttle? on the shelf in the garage cos they forgot to refit it?? talking of which, my garage, after an oil and auto fluid change 'lost' the under-engine protection sheet (fibreboard i guess) and when i asked them to re-fit it, they claimed it was never there! so if you're thinking of using a garage in newbury for your vehicle repairs, PM me first to check that it's not the one i spent £4,000 with!
  7. did your throttle continue to work properly after the lubrication job? i did mine, but it came back afer 50 miles, so i suppose i've got to clean the throttle body, but i was curious how yours had gone.
  8. i did reply to this but it's disappeared into the ether, so just imagine what it might have said, and smile anyway!
  9. Sky? Cable? blimey, we only get channel four when the wind's in the right direction! i'll have to get a rich friend to video it, then borrow a player, put water in the steam generator, wait for the valves to warm up, then sit down on our utility furniture (ask your dad!), and watch it on our B & W 9" bush!
  10. at a guess - like all these things! heater will only blow hot when water temp is hot enough to make a difference. the temperature is determined by one of two water temp sensors, one of which is mounted on the intake manifold.... my guess is that when they fitted your starter, they dislodged or removed the cable to the sensor. so re-connect it, and the hot should come on. if you had one of the cheap manuals on CD, although not very good, they do give you an idea of where these things are.
  11. is jasper a rough diamond like his avatar suggests??
  12. No Maria, he's not called at all - i was thinking of contacting you to chivvy him up! unles you know someone else who will do it that's localish? bob
  13. there's a seperate ECU for the mirrors, (above the glove box) and another ECU for the steering column (close to the steering column), and the third is for the seats, under the driving seat (it looks like, on the bad drawing i've got!) look for a multiway plug that's loose or damaged. doesn't sound like a fuse as it's intermitent. i assume the seat moves every time you use the manual switches?
  14. eBay - kids steal sets of them and flog them!! maybe they started to take yours but got disturbed?
  15. but if the airducts were leaking behind the dash, the cool air would still come into the car - try the test sequence and see what codes come up (assuming you haven't got a black display!!).
  16. 2) PM 'maria', her husband's company might be able to help - based newbury 3) there's an ECU under one of the front seats that controls the seat motors, but, are you getting the 'beep' when you set '1'? cos if you're not, then it's not storing it anyway.
  17. can't believe its the starter, cos you had a new one just over a year ago!
  18. steve, when you said blueprint, where you referring to the company Blueprint ADL, who supply copies of japanese car parts? i've acquired a copy of their latest parts CD, which lists lots of parts for LS400, and i wondered if there were any bad reports on them. have you (or anyone else) heard anything? if they are any good, would it be worth someone negotiating with ADL so that they could supply club members at the same prices they supply wholesalers? ADL won't normally deal direct with general public.
  19. i don't know if your GS is like my LS, but i would look for: air coming out of the water header bottle when engine's running. don't always expect water coming out of exhaust as mine didn't when heads warped and gasket blew. maybe when the engine was overheating, the guage didn't show it (mine didn't, it just sat at the mid-point!) and this could have affected the EMU, so disconnect the battery for 5 mins (then resave your radio settings afterwards!) and it might run better. plugs / HT leads? hope this helps.
  20. i didn't get this, but i did get a spoof PayPal one, which claimed to come from them and asking me to click on a link to download a small program to increase the security of my account. BUT, the link which was typed in the email as being PayPal, incl the https:\\ security address, actually was linking to an entirely different address, which i discovered before clicking it. i forwarded it to paypal security and it was a new one to them, which they've now got to investigate to track down the real senders.
  21. what's wrong with a rolled golf umbrella?? i don't play but i knew mine would come in handy one day! it holds up the LS a treat.
