Hi folks, just visiting from the LS forum.

Today I followed an IS 220D (07 plate) from Carlisle to Hexham. Every time he accelerated, great clouds of blue smoke emanated from the exhaust. Is this a known problem or is his engine on the way out?

Well, blue smoke indicates that his car is burning oil, so yes, it sounds like his engine isn't in the best of health.

My dad had a Mercedes 560SEL which used to smoke on acceleration so much that the cars in the rear view mirror would disappear   What was impressive was how long the engine continued to run that way, but then again, it was possibly the laziest V8 ever made

Blown through engine gasket - very common on IS220D. That could be other things, like bad quality diesel or contamination in the tank (or other components), but the first one is most likely.

P.S. I have seen people mixing diesel with used engine oil with various ratios (like 30/70), but that si on old non-turbo diesel cars... I know nothing dumber can be done and it is environmental disaster in terms of emissions, I assume that is very unlikely that somebody would do that in Lexus (that would surely kill than already unreliable engine and turbo).
