Lexus LS 430 Rotten egg smell like sulfur

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I noticed under heavy acceleration i get rotten egg / sulfur kinda smell coming from car. Did some google research and some say its normal, some say its coz of using normal unleaded fuel, some say use hi octane and it will go away and some say its BAD CAT converter.

If its bad cat converter as in clogged up converter then what option do i have.

1. is it possible to clean it ?

2. is there way to get some code to check if its cat converter ?

3. how expensive this job is  ?

4. if i go for custom exhaust with out cats, will car throw any codes at me ?

5. some cold morning starts i noticed my right exhaust hole is blowing plenty of steam where as left side is very little, close to none.

Thanks all.

AJ

No smell in the car is "normal" unless it's self produced!  It would suggest to me an exhaust leak.  It's the cats that cause the sulfur smell so unless it's running badly I would be looking firstly for an exhaust gas leak rather than a blockage.

Give the car an occasional  ITALIAN TUNE UP.....ie drop from top gear (on say a very clear road) to produce say 3500/4000 revs for up to 1/2 mile or so, so as to clear the exhaust system.

I do it a lot in the E class estate. Seems to work for me.

Regards

John
