Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Internet Explorer is inbeded inside windows regardless of what version you have so you can't uninstall it only update.

I spoke direct with mircosoft about it and they weren't much help, The only option was to force install win98 to try and go back to Version 5.5, it didn't work so I reformated my hard drive and started again

If do go for a force install, this overwrites all pervious update or so microsoft recon, make sure you back-up the files you want before you try and reinstall windows.

What version did you download from the MS site? What version is installed if you do Help - About?

What OS are you on?

If it's not 2000 or XP then you can uninstall IE with this:

http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html

That should then leave you in a position to reinstall.

Have you tried disabling any personal firewall, popup blocking or antivirus browser integration to see if it's one of those that is causing the problem?
