Should be easy. Get the vehicle on level ground, remove the filler plug and see if the oil is level with the bottom of the hole. If not then squeeze some more in there (gear oil normally comes in plastic bottle with flexible hose) until it runs out.

The level shouldn't go down. If you have to put a lot of oil in there then you probably have a leak.

Cheers for that Colin, I think that i may have a slight leak because last time the car was being serviced at Lexus, the mechanic said the level was low. He offered to change the oil for me but could not remove the drain plug (rusted in).

He told me to keep my eye on the level, because ,if the diff went, it would cost me about £3000 to replace it.

I must say that i never have seen any patches of oil on my drive but just thought that maybe i should check the level anyway.
