MOT issue: electrical wiring insulation damage/deterioration

Dear all,

Grateful for your help...

I have an RX450 and have just had the following flag up on the MOT as a minor defect.  The tester said that it was the high voltage cable from the hybrid Battery running but that they would not touch it.  Any thoughts on solutions or who could look at it. I am in Leeds.

Never come across this on a Lexus?

  Apologies for the two " replies " above, I was trying to change the keyboard language into english and eventually I managed to do it.

On my car, the high voltage cables from the Battery to the inverter, part of their route is under the car. They run in orange conduit. I assume yours follow a similar pattern. I take it that is where the damage is.

To repair the insulation, there are electrical insulating tapes available to various ratings. Some of them are rated to 11kv, easily available. There are also shrouds  to even much higher ratings, 66 Kv and 132kv.

Due to the lethal danger involved, I strongly recommend to get a professional to do the job for you. Do not even think about attempting it yourself.

I have already outlined the repair procedure earlier but on second thoughts, I deleted it. 

Always remember and never ever forget that any cable operating at any high voltage  dc circuit, behaves like a capacitor that holds its charge even after it has been isolated from its circuit. It is imperative to earth it by connecting it directly to the ground and keeping it so until all repairs have been carried out. High voltage dc circuits are lethal.

Your local Lexus dealer would be my thoughts ?

Assuming you have it serviced by Lexus “it may” be covered by relax ?

Am out of the Lexus dealer network this year so will see who else could do it locally.  Will have a look at local hybrid specialists, that would be my thought.

Am also thinking about getting waxoyl treatment for the underside around the same time for winter.  Anyone else had this done?

Have you considered Lanoguard? Apparently it is easy to apply but the car needs treating each year.

There's a variety of underbody treatments available, ranging from a couple of hundred to  several hundred pounds, depending on current state of vehicle, products used, and how thorough you want them to be.

Personally I went the diy route, using Bilt Hamber products on the underside and wheel wells, followed by a final spray over everything with ACF-50. The whole job took around 4 hours, spread over a couple of days to allow for drying time. The Bilt Hamber stuff should be good for 2 or 3 years, but I give the underside a spray with ACF 50 annually, as it only takes about 15 minutes.

The more thorough the better, but any kind of rust proofing is better than nothing, in my opinion.
