I am considering purchasing a 2nd hand Lexus for towing a twin axle caravan. Does any one have any idea of the fuel consumption when towing as I may be moving from a diesel 2.4L to the 2003.0L petrol.

I am considering automatics Nov 51 RX300SE 85400 miles £16990, 02 RX300 49200 miles £17990 or a 52 RX300 25990 miles £20790. I like the 51 SE as it has all the boys toys like SatNav, photochromic rear view mirror, etc. The 52 has rear sensors fitted. The only one with a tow bar is the 02 and I have to admit I am not overley fond of its looks.

Can any one give me an indepth insight into tthe RX300 regarding consumption, traction on wet grass or off road capabilities ( not the heavy serious stuff) just enough to pull a large caravan off a muddy field.

Input appreciated. Thanks.

If you can wait that long, ask me again after Easter, when I get back from Wales on my first trip in the RX ('02 SE) with the van on the back!

Cheers,

John

I am now sitting happily in my van in a farmer's field not far from the West Wales coast, admiring my slightly muddy RX300SE through the window, having now completed 196 miles with 1400kg of caravan on the back.

So far the RX has proved to be a superb tow car, very smooth and stable, despite some strong winds, and with plenty of power to keep up with the traffic. I miss the low down torque of a diesel, (my perfect vehicle would be an RX300 with Audi's superb 3.0TDi engine) but that's easily compensated for with a slightly heavier right foot. Reversed the caravan uphill on wet grass with no problem at all.

Towing MPG averages 15.7, on a mixture of motorway (cruise control set at 70,GPS indicating 65), dual carriageway, and rural roads. (I get 21 - 22 solo).

Cheers,

John
