A tightly ruled firewall has the options for allowing specific ports to be opened or closed outbound or inbound. Plus it gives that extra barrier against nasty stuff flying out there on the net.

You need both. Most spyware etc. arrive via email or from normal TCP port 80 http web traffic. You need to allow those through your firewall or you won't be able to do much on the Internet!

I use Avast. The purchased version runs on my server, and the free home version runs on my laptops.

I just used Avast free edition for the first time as it seems to be the only free virusscanner that will run on Windows XP x64 Edition.

Cheers,

The best configuration I've found for keeping my machines singing sweetly is using the following:

McAfee AntiVirus

ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm Firewall

SpywareBlaster

Spybot Search & Destroy

AdAware Personal

Microsoft's AntiSpyware offering something I will never use until they stop allowing Alexa stuff to stay on your machine just because they are affiliated/or own them. The above combination works exceptionally well from my experience.
