Hi guys hope you can help ive just bought my MK1 LS400 (my first lexus) I love it to bits but it seems to have 1 noisy follower/tappet on the ns bank of cylinders can these be adjusted or does it need a new set any info would be appreciated Thanks Jay

Search in the forums also USA you will find information.

It seems that valves were a problem on the early Ls 400.

It seems pointless however, to run a luxury car, noted for it's refinement, except it sounds like a bag o'spanners....

Save a few quid and trade it in for an old Rover 800!

Alternatively, give it a good thrashing with some oil flush (Tec2000 works a treat) which should quieten any hydraulic valve noises, and then see if it requires any adjustment after an oil change.

I have seen Tec2000 flush work on Fords which sounded like they required new Camshafts! 30 minutes, then silence!

The engine uses shims to gauge the valve clearance and they are prone to slightly more wear on a couple of the shims over time.

the valves are hydraulic on Lexus so only thing to change would be valve shims.

if its a tapping you are getting, it may be the EGR pipes at the back of the enginge that have corroded, this is a common problem and soes give a tapping noise

Surely Hydraulic valves are self adjusting, using the oil pressure to quieten them?

I say this because I once had a 12,000 mile LS400 and left it standing for three months.

When I started it, it smoked like a bitch and ratlled like a bag o'nails for around 10 seconds while the oil worked it's way around.

It was fine after this....

Hydraulic tappets can benefit from a good flushing fluid. We use this on every car we service, and you can sometimes hear it work on old gummed up engines!

Some engines have a combination of hydraulic and adjustors, such as the Honda powered Rover 827.

I know where your coming from as my old 24V Senator had Hydraulic lifters, but the LS400 has shims like the old Saab 900 engine.
