Hi, I have a LS400 Mkiii '95 and wondered if it was possible to connect up my GPS sat device to mute the stereo when it has something to say?

Does anyone have the wiring connections for the standard stereo and what input level would be needed to activate the mute function. I geuss this is available for mobile phone fitting etc?

Thanks in advance.

There are many differences between U.K. and U.S. models (other than your steering wheel being on the correct side), but here is a post from the U.S. side of the forum which includes a photo of a connector under the rear of the center console of a U.S. 95 LS to which blake918 connected the mute wire from his Nokia car kit. I have a similar but 6 pin connector on my U.S. 00 LS to which I connected my phone kit's mute wire.

The connectors were originally meant for the Lexus phone system. When the mute pin on the connector is grounded, the audio system mutes. I think someone on this U.K. forum once mentioned that that his 98-00 U.K. spec LS had a similar OEM phone connector under his center console so maybe your 95 does too. On my U.S. 00 LS, I also found a mute point in the trunk on a connector meant for the OEM phone transceiver.

Does your GPS Nav have a mute wire? If so, would you mind saying who makes your GPS Nav?

just a word of caution to save your time, [with smartnav] a lot of radios are too slow to 'react' to a satnav message, you lose part of the message when muting, unlike a phone ringing which just loses a ring or 2.

In my LS400, the radio mutes instantly when I ground the phone connector mute pin with a grounded test light. There is no delay.

I have checked the specifications on several GPS Nav systems available in the U.S. but none indicate an audio system mute function. I am wondering if products of the same brand sold in the U.K. have a mute function and if the mute function is simply not advertised in the U.S. The main reason I have not bought a GPS Nav is that I thought I would never be able to hear the prompts when the audio system is on - which it always is.

Kansas, It is a "Drive Smart" I use, see www.drive-smart.co.uk

The device is more to help me drive with extra care at and near accident black spots. Just by coincidence these places often have speed cameras inhabited at the same place.

Any way, I often find that I miss some of the Drive Smart announcements when the stereo is on, so I was wondering if I could use the "ear" piece conector of the DS to mute the stereo. I'll need to find out of the DS can ground this pin when it has something to announce. There is also an RS232 port on it, so I'll ask on the DS forum for advice.

Thanks all.
