A friends of my sons has just got hold of an old (mk1 I think) 400 and has decided to put the engine plus 2 turbos in a Supra. He does know quite a lot about jap cars and engines so I assume he knows what he is doing, but......

Will it fit?

Will it go like he thinks it will?

Anyone got any ideas?

Incidentally the rest of the motor will be up for grabs later on (its a green one), he wants nowt but the engine and headers and has offered it to me

Dave,

Go to www.lextreme.com - These guys know everything about that V8 engine, and they even put the engine into a boat, once the car was beyond repair!

Oh it will go like stink!!! The LS400 engine has been tuned up to 2,700bhp!

This is the actual page where he added twin turbos to his LS400..

I wanna get back into one of these..that V8 is sooo sweet...

2,700 bhp??? I don't think so....

As a direct comparison on aircraft, the old 'R'- type engine, which had powered the Supermarine S.6 and S.6B Schneider racing seaplanes, had a swept volume of 36·75 litres. This was about ten litres more than the V12 Merlin Engine, although its basic layout – a supercharged liquid-cooled 60° V12 – was similar. Under sprint conditions the ‘R' engine produced an output of 2,700bhp at sea-level, but that was only when using rather exotic fuel.

Yup was outside work the other day having a smoke and a Hurricane flew over, sweet sound the Merlin.

Googled the Merlin cos LOC was down and at it's peak reached about 1,600 bhp out of 27 litres IIRC then jets took over.

Well, this report begs to differ. Apparently, they are running the V8 at 50psi (supercharged)..runs on some 50/50 mixture of Methanol-Nitromethane, with forged pistons and a stock bottom end..the second article actually gives a picture of the car!!!!

Also, seeking to deny the output of a modern piston engine by citing the output of one made 75 years ago is a strange piece of thinking.

How about the 1500 bhp wrung from the 4-cyl, 1.5 litre BMW F1 unit, some 25 years ago?

That's 2000 bhp, not 2,700 bhp...I said direct comparison not exaggeration.

looks like a beast!

Having read about these cars before I'd be inclind to accept its somewhere around 2000bhp. How long it could hold it for is another question. And surely there is no harm in them posting the rolling road reports.

Oh yeah... not many rolling roads will handle over 1000 bhp never mind 2.
