Connecting Laptop To Tv

Can somebody please help me?

I want to connect my lap top up to my LCD HDTV to watch films that I've got on the laptop :whistling: I've bought a VGA? cable and can get the picture on to the TV but the sound remains on the laptop. My TV is connected to a surround sound set up via a digital optical cable, so I don't use the actual speakers on the TV.

How do I get the sound from the laptop onto the surround sound? Can the VGA cable be used for sound along with the picture? Or do I need to connect another cable to a sound output on the laptop ie the headphone socket?

Thanks for any help or advice from you knowledgeable people

if you find you have some lip sync problems, which can be quite common with flat tv's you may have to route the audio to your TV instead of the amp. or use something like VLC to play back your movies with adjusted audio delay. Reason being that some tv's spend a little too long processing the picture and incur a delay. audio routed thru your tv will also be delayed to match. You tv should have an audio input next to the VGA or at least the manual will tell you which one to use :)

Thanks for your help guys. I've just bought the phono, stereo jack plug thingy from maplins and it works great. For what I want anyway. :)

Although the picture quality on the tv is a little hazy through the lap top with vertical wiggly lines moving through it. I dont know whether its to do with the VGA cable or I've not set something quite right. I suppose I wont notice it after a while anyway.

@ Brett, Cheers for the info mate. I do sometimes find I have lip sync problems (not a lot) when watching a dvd. I assume this is the same problem? I dont want to connect through the tv though as I'll lose the DTS sound. Both tv and dvd (upscaler) are both samsung so I would've thought there shouldn't be a problem with it. Its only out sometimes by a millisecond but when it is its just enough to ***** me off. Like watching a dubbed film. Also sometimes when I stop and restart it can sort it out for a while.

yeah ive got the tv in my kitchen connected to my pc. so can have the picture appear there aswell.

was great when i had a bbq. i split the sound to 3 different stereos. one in the living room, one in kitchen and one in garden. was seriously loud. and had the music videos playing in the kitchen and on the pc monitor aswell.

got 2 23" inch samsung lcds, otherwise i had a conflict between the 2 monitors, as in they were a different aspect ratio. used to have a dell lcd monitor on the pc but now got the samsung.
