Mini Cooper

Hi all,

The missus has a 51 plate Mini Cooper (1.6 L) and for the past couple of months when in lower gears at lower revs, but accelerating up to speed, the car has been kind of jolting/spluttering like the gear selected is too high (when it isn't).

I'm not that knowledgable with the ins and outs of engine etc, but would i be right in suggesting possible causes as:

- Blocked Fuel Filter

- Damaged Spark Plug(s)

- O2 sensor

- Blocked Injector

- Naffed HT lead

- A Misfire (not sure how you gauge how a missfire feels  )

Any ideas as to the problem would be appreciated, before she lets BMW/Mini loose on it and end up with a whopping great bill.

Cheers

Rob

If you are not sure what you are doing you could pay BMW for a diagnostics. O2 sensor should give a fault light / code. As you have suggested fuel or ignition is the usual culprit. Does it do only when car is hot or warmed up, or any other clues to help diagnosis? Have you looked at the new mini forums? Worth taking the plugs out and seeing if one or more are fouled ot wronglt gapped or even running different colours ( sooty / pinky grey deposits ).

Ay up Rob how long ago was it serviced mate as when i had mine it seemed to go through plugs quite quickly? I brought the BluFin super chip kit and it was great as it seemed to get rid of any flat spots and the revs picked up a lot quicker plus it upped the bhp a bit and all for £299 so might be worth a look at that But i'd have a look at the plugs to start with and change the air filter as they seem to collect everything like a hoover?

was serviced about 18 months ago i believe. since then its hand new exhaust bracket and radiator.
