Keep Tyres With Wheels When Not In Use?

Hello All,

I am about to change my stock 17" alloys with winter tyres for 18" baransus for summer season.

Would you keep tyres with wheels together or separately and if so what pressure should I leave?

I assume a bit lower than during normal driving. I normally use about 39 psi on front and 40 rear.

Winter tyres and 17" alloys will be not in use for a few long months.

I keep mine on the rims with approx 10 psi in them. The tyres need to be protected during storage from water moisture, chemicals, sunlight, heat (also extreme cold), and ozone, so I store in black plastic bags under cover.

everyone here normally reduces the pressure a bit and stacks the wheels or has a special wheel storage device to keep thier winter tyres during the summer months

I keep the same pressure as when driving. I see no point in decreasing the pressure. Anyway, ususally the pressure drops in those 4-7 months when I don't use them.

that I didn't think about keeping it vertically.

Any reason why vertical or horizontal storage is deemed preferable? I just stack mine horizontally in their bags, after all that's how most peeps spare wheels spend their life...i.e horizontally stored in the dark.

Edit..OK, just checked the Uniroyal website for preferred method...Tyres on rims should be laid flat, off rims should be stored vertical, but rotating every now and then to prevent distortion. Check out :-

I disagree with the website, I wouldn't put tires on rims flat as the side of the tire is very easy to damage and also tire is not suited for such a position and pressure (especially when nobody would put the tires flat and next each other - people would stack them on each other)

Also by stacking horizantally the risk of scrathing the rim is lower.

I change for winter tires every year (from approximately november till april) and I do it all the time this way and never had problems.

Ofcourse, before changing I always give the tires to the service to check balancing.

well i agree with the website :P and i also change 4 winter tyres for the same period and have never had probs.
