Timing Belt Replacement

I'm going to need to do the timing belt on my '94 car at some point in the next 20k miles, and Dad will also need to do his '96 motor, probably sooner rather than later... whilst there's an excellent picture tutorial over on lexls for the '94 motor, there seems to be some minor differences on the '96? I've noticed that timing kits for the '96 only have one idler pulley rather than 2 for the '90-'94...

Are there significant differences in the procedure between the '94 & '96, or is it pretty easy to adapt the tutorial to the '96 car?

Thanks!

I was going to start a new thread but as this is pretty recent I'll just ask it here...

How long does the Timing Belt change take on a 95 LS400... My Auto-Data information says 2.9hrs but I've seen various places say 12+ hrs!!

Cheers - was an interesting read. I'll be using Aftermarket parts as I work at an Autofactors. I would ALWAYS trust ADL Blueprint stuff but some of the cheaper brands can be very shocking!

Its interesting to see the big differences in time that Autodata say and real life experiences. Normally they are pretty good. Maybe there are some tricks to speed things up, or maybe they have simply got the wrong information.

Its very annoying that I have stamps in the book up to 138k (current milage is 168k). Lexus dealer stamps to 93k but a private garage there on. Unfortunately there is nothing to indicate when a timing belt is changed?! I have a recipt that shows it was changed at 69k but other than that nothing. Is there anywhere else that I may be able to find this information? The private garage stamped in the book seems to have closed as I have tried contacting them.

When you get the genuine belt, there is a sticker supplied with it which you attach under the bonnet (fill in the mileage). If it's had a belt, it should be somewhere.

My mate said that it wasn't a hard job, just the amount of stuff to dismantle before getting access.

I've heard good reports about Blueprint stuff, but I erred on side of caution.

This was a good idea! Had a little hunt around and then I saw a sticker right under my nose! It was changed at 120k so there is no major rush to get it done now :) - I'll probably still do it soon just for peace of mind though.

On a side note... I've NEVER had a Blueprint product returned because of a manufacturing/quality issue.
