Gear Box Whining

I've asked about this before but wondered if anyone else had any solutions to fix the whining. It goes through every gear apart from fifth.

Should I replace the gear box as it comes out cheaper then having it rebuilt?

I only ask this as I'm thinking of selling my is200 at the end of the year.

Auto or Manual? If you're planning on selling then a quick fix would be to try some new fluid in it. If it's a manual then I'd recommend you use RedLine MT-90. If it's auto then you'll need Toyota Type-IV trans fluid.

Its a manual. I've had the transmission fluid changed but still the same. Will the red line knock out the noise?

I still want to enjoy the car untill I sell it so am going to spend some money to improve the handling and performance.

Have been in contact with some refurb companies. Can get a refurb gearbox for around 350 quid. Then fit it myself with a mate of mine. Will be cheaper than having a mechanic do it over here. Will cost me over a grand if I did.

FYI the six speed box found in the IS200 is also used in Mk2 6spd MX5's, and Nissan S15 Silvia's incase you could get hold of them for less than £350.

If you have changed the fluid already I doubt changing it again will help, even to something like 140wt or similar.

If you just want the noise to go away and dont care about the current gearbox too much then you could do what some unscroupulus car dealers used to do back in the day to get rid of a car with a noisy box by filling you box with tights or saw dust :)

I am not reccomending the above really, although something like moly slip may be worth a try?
