Unexplained Noise Coming From Rear Axle

Recommended Posts

Have an '04 RX300 SE-L which has developed a strange droning sound to rear. Have checked exhaust and wheel play for bearings but they seem ok. Car has 91K miles and has never missed a beat in the last 30K miles. Tyres are good and recently new, the noise came along after.

I know early models had tranmission problems etc. Anyone have any similiar wierd noises?

Should I be thinking of changing trans oil and rear axle oil first? Suggestions much appreciated.

As you have no replies I'll stick my 2 pennyworth in.

Back axles when worn usually whine on 'drive' or 'overrun'

I.E may whine all the time with power on or only when 'coasting'

When assembled the gears are preloaded to mesh correctly.

When they wear they whine.

Start by changing the back axle oil usually Hypoid 90 grade and see if this helps.

i could be very wrong but if the noise started after new tyres could it be road noise from the different new tyres or did you stick with the same make/type ?

Yep gonna check/change oil see if that works, cheers. Its not the tyres, all four were changed at the same time and are the same as was on it originally.

Local Dealer is putting his money on a wheel bearing which means a new hub also. Any good contacts you guys know off if it turns out I actually need to buy these items? Couldn't go to the dealer, he's an arm and a leg and I need both mine for work!!
