Fault Codes P1135 And P1155

Recommended Posts

2001 RX 300 with 49000 miles with CEL (check engine light) and VSC suddenly appearing. After wiggling numerous wires, pulling and reseating relays and fuses and finally checking the rubber hose between the airbox and inlet manifold, I invested in a £35- eBay OBD 2 code reader. This said I had P1135 which means the heater element on the oxygen/lambda sensor in the exhaust manifold by the bulkhead was gone. This can be checked by looking for a circuit between the two black wires to the sensor - if there is a circuit the heater elements OK if not its likely burnt out - to check is very difficult and to remove the wiring plug as you cannot get two hands to it, my wife pressed the release catch on the plug from the top of the engine whilst I pulled it out from underneath the car. My heater element didn't show a circuit. Now where to find a replacement part - Inchcape Lexus wanted £205- plus VAT for the correct part number 89467 48011. Thats a lot of money and I couldn't find the part anywhere on the internet using the Lexus part number. After doing some more internet research, I found that on the U.S. lexus forums and parts sites, Denso part No 234-9009 is often mentioned as the replacement for Lexus part 89467-48011 (which is stamped on the part in my car) along with Toyota part 89467-41011 and 89467- 41021, however, again I could not find a reference to Denso part 234-9009 anywhere in the UK or Europe. What I did discover was that Denso part DOX-0243 was cited on some UK parts sites as a replacement for Toyota part 89467-41011 and 89467- 41021. In essence then DOX-0243 seems to be the Euro equivalent of 234-9009.

I ordered mine from sparkplugs.co.uk where it cost the most reasonable sum of £63- plus VAT and postage. - Less than a THIRD of the cost from Lexus! I also bought a removal tool which proved invaluable and the customer service was excellent, even to the extent that they checked I was sure it was the correct part and it arrived the very next day.

There are plenty of threads showing how to change the sensor on the U.S. Lexus forums.

The new Lambda sensor for which the only visible difference I could see was that it had yellow reference tape on the wiring rather than brown, had exactly the same plug and wiring length. It's now been fitted for 3 weeks and the car is in daily use travelling a minimum 20 miles per day. No CEL light and no VSC light any more. If you wish to follow what I did please do so AT YOUR OWN RISK. When I later get the inevitable error code P1155 to say the other manifold sensor by the radiator has gone, I'll be saving another £130- and ordering a Denso DOX-0243. All the best.

Hi can you tell me if the Denso sensor you fitted is still working.

I have contacted sparkplugs who have contacted Denso and they say that

DOX 0243 is not suitable for the Lexus.

Thanks

Keith

Hi Keith,

I followed mdj8 in his advice on the cross referencing of this part after also getting the VSC and check engine lights on, code p1155 being my problem, lucky for me this indicated the front sensor so easy to get at!

I replaced it with the Denso DOX-0243, which whilst early days for me does appear to have solved my problem also, so my grateful thanks to mdj8 for his efforts in achieving this cost saving solution to what appears a common problem.

I suppose Denso have to maintain an allegiance to Toyota so that premium pricing can be maintained for the Lexus brand but I can confirm they do both have Toyota stamped on them and look very very similar!

Finally I can also recommend sparkplugs.co.uk as offering a reliable and prompt supply solution if you should choose to go down this route, good luck.

The story so far on my 2001 RX300: Had codes P1135 and P1155 come up(air fuel sensors) so removed the sensors checked their resistance and they were both toast so replaced with Denso DOX-0243 sensors and codes were gone.

Then I drove car for about 10 miles and CEL came on again this time with codes P0174(bank 2) and P0171(bank1).

Now before I managed to get my own OBD-II scanner I thought it was a fuel problem as the car was missing so I put some Greased Lightning fuel system cleaner in it - would this be related?

Or maybe it IS the DOX-0243 sensors but they(the new ones) are not registering fault codes for me and I checked their resistance with a multimeter and they gave the correct reading of 0.8 ohms so I am 90% sure that these Denso DOX-0243 sensors are ok(i hope).

This is great information, well done for all the investigation you carried out. I too have been getting this error code since early last year literally a week before it was booked in for a service, I mentioned it to my service garage (Lexus Specialist) and they diagnosed the same codes and could replace the sensor for around £250 all in.....I declined the offer at the service as the light had gone out just a few days before, since then the light has come on at least three times and then rest itself after a few days with no noticable difference to drivability. It appears to trigger the error code when I have been stuck for a long period in traffic jams, its the only common factor I can think of. Other than that the car is running perfectly and await the next error code episode and hopefully subsequent self repair, clever these Japanese eh? :winky:

No doubt eventually the heater circuit will actually fail and then this information will be very well used, thanks.

Hi All, just an update to say 5 months on the fix is still working. The car is still being driven on a daily basis and I have had no issues or warning lights since fitting the DOX-0243. Fuel consumption is a steady 21.5 at the moment which I suppose is OK given it's hilly around here and the fact the car is used for the morning and afternoon school run of 20 mile round trip each so much stop/start driving, and the car likely only reaches a decent operating temp after say 5 miles. Hopefully will improve to 23ish when the weather gets warmer. Rgds

Hi,

My RX300 has VSC and check engine lights on. The Lexus dealer tells me the fault is with Bank 2 Sensor 1 and that a replacement will cost ~£300 fitted. I paid this last year when the other oxygen sensor failed.

From reading this thread, it seems that it would be fairly easy for me to replace the unit myself as I believe that Bank 2 Sensor 1 is the one on the manifold near the radiator. Can someone confirm this please?

Also, if I replaced it, would the warning lights go off without me doing anything else or would they have to be reset somehow?

Thanks,

Dave.

Not sure who the queston is too,but will have ago at answer (mine is the tread above)Yes bank 2 sensor1 is by the Rad

fairly easy to get at,if you warm car up a bit the sensor will undo easy enough,(a little easy oil will help) also if the plug is hard to release use a small termal srewe driver to lift catch, while pressing down lever to release .Did mine one morning when it had been a cold frosty night and plastic plug was stiff and brittle

Use only the anti-sieve paste that comes with the new sensor, they dont like copper slip or silicon base products

Hope this helps Stuart

Stuart,

I got the car new in Jan 2002 and it's done 61,000 miles. Apart from the A/F sensors failing last year and this, it has been utterly reliable. The only other expense apart from routine servicing is new tyres at about 32,000 miles and wipers at 45,000.

I'm still on the original Battery, exhaust, etc. The aircon has never needed topping up and I've never even had to replace a bulb!

I wonder if more recent Lexus cars are as reliable. I doubt if I'll ever have such a reliable car again which is why I'm loathe to part with it.

Stuart,

Try as I might, I couldn't get the old sensor off so in the end I took it to a small independent garage in the village where I live. He charged £42 for fitting the sensor and re-setting the warning lights. So with the sensor costing me £80, the total repair bill was £122 compared to the £300 that the Lexus dealer quoted. Quite a saving!

My timing belt is due next Jan and the Lexus dealer says it'll be about £350 on top of £400 for the 10 year service. I'll also need new disc all round then too so I'm starting to think that I might change the car before then. Much as I'd like a new RX, the price of them now is just too much for a pensioner like me.

Thanks for your help.

Dave.

Just wanted to say thanks for this post.

I had VSC and check engine lights up with no clue as to what it was. Got my mechanic to interrogate it and found the fault code P1155 on here. Bought an O2 sensor off Spark Plugs Ltd for £78.80 delivered (my mechanic couldn't find the same part for less than £100 locally). Had my guy fit it and reset the ECU, 10 minute job.

Been clear ever since, plus now hitting 28mpg driven carefully.

So thanks for all the info on this post, well chuffed!

I rang sparkplugs.co.uk today to source the O2 sensor and was told there is no compatible replacement for Lexus part #89467-48011 (which is the sensor), when I mentioned the DOX-0243 I was told it would not work, wrong part!!!

Can somebody confirm they are using that Denso part and have been for a while with no issues please?

Just to resurrect an old thread, many thanks for this mdj8! Had both P1135 and P1155 (hidden by the previous owner pulling the CEL bulb :megaangry: ). Ordered 2 x DOX-0243 + tool from sparkplugs.co.uk, came next day. P1155 was a doddle at the front (after soaking in penetrating oil and warming the manifold first). P1135 rear was slightly more of a challenge, as others found the hardest bit was disconnecting the lead. If it helps anyone (as I had no spare hands at the time), I snipped the wires at the sensor end, then threaded these behind the back of the engine at the top so I could press down with one hand on the clip on the right and pull the wires (with the electrical plug attached out from the left. Came out in 10 seconds flat.

Cheers
