Thinking of getting pair of winter tyres for my IS200 rear wheels. Wonder wide tyres or narrow tyres good for winter. (Like 245/40/17 better than 205/50/17 or vice versa?) which range (width/height would fit? ) thanks for any info

take the same size as summer tyres if your using 17" wheels. so 215/45/17 and you need all 4 as having grip on the back is as bad as having to wheels at all on the front. think like this. great grip on the rear and turning into the corner with no grip at all you will just go the way the rear wheels are going. and if you can get 205/55/16 as they are cheaper.... i live in sweden and winter tyres are on all cars over here by law

Pretty much what Jay said, it would be crazy to just do the rear wheels, very dangerous I would think. If you were only going to do 2 then the fronts would be the top priority. All braking and steering is done at the front, get all 4 or none I would say.

Thanks guys, so no advantage changing tyre width then? Sick of having to push even at supermarket car park when there’s little snow/slush. I thought winter tyres on real wheels would help at least on such times. Have couple of spare 17 alloys so 16 is not an option. Never used any winter tyres on earlier cars, so don’t know what to expect. What do you think of used tyres? ( seen a few 5mm ones on bay, tempting to try a set before buying new)

I have a set of four winter tyres on my spare 17" IS250 Rims fitted to my IS200 Sport. The IS-F and 250 stay in the garage while there's ice or snow about, but the IS200 on winter rubber goes just about anywhere. I drove into a business park on Saturday, but the Company I wanted to purchase something from was closed, as was all the businesses sharing the park, so the tarmac was basically covered in sheet ice. It wasn't a problem for the tyres though, as the car steered and braked without any loss of traction (at low speed of course).
