Engin Temp Up… Down… Ok Then Not...

Hi,

I have a Lexus GS 300 1995/ 6 and it has a mechanical fan on the radiator ( OK) the small fan is electric…

Temp oK on long journeys but on short journeys it seem to go right up and then sometimes it will stabilise even at standstill…

any Idea's ??

I take it the large fan is mechanically driven? The smaller fan number 2 is electrically driven so I would check to see if this is cutting in when the engine gets warm.

If it doesn't connect the motor direct to a 12 volt supply to see if it works then look at the fan switch which is temperature operated,check all the electrical connections also.

Other possibles are a defective thermostat,low coolant levels or an air lock in the cooling system.

The coolant fan is viscous coupled from what I remember, so that would be a good port of call if there are definately no coolant leaks or issues.

The smaller electric fan I'm sure is the aircon fan, so won't kick in to aid coolant temps.
