Rx400 Airbag Cable In Steering Column

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have a 2005 RX400h.

Recently the airbag warning light came on.

Investigation by my local Lexus Centre found that the movement of the steering column in and out had rubbed a hole in the airbag control cable.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Hello and welcome to the LOC.

Sounds an unusual problem, never heard of any other case.

I have the auto adjusting steering colunm on mine and it is still fine after 18 years and hasn't caused an airbag problem.

If the loom is damaged by the movement of the steering wheel it could be that the wiring wasn't correctly positioned initially.

I assume the car is now out of warranty but it may be worth mentioning that the defect is not something you would expect on a prestige vehicle of this age and would they be prepared to either provide free labour or parts.

Incidentally have you adjusted either of the front seats recently?

Thank you Steve

The fault came on independently of any other work. In fact the car has needed nothing than regular servicing and tyres!

I have asked the dealer to contact Lexus and ask for a goodwill gesture as I suspect it may be an issue Lexus needs to examine more closely. If any more of this model turns up with the same issue, it could be a design flaw and with the implication of air bags not deploying in an accident, might require a recall.

have you owned the vehicle from new? This could be a one off as I've not heard of it before, but it could also only affect RHD vehicles so the issue wouldn't be seen in the biggest market, the US.

Did they take any pictures?

I have owned the car for 2 years.

I am not sure if they took pictures; they certainly did not supply them to me but they tell me they have reported it to Lexus.
