Full Wheel Alignment

Recommended Posts

since getting the car had noticed the car felt a little...wandery, at speed, with a hint of rear wheel steering feel, decided a full geometry alignment was in order. Results today showed the two front wheels camber were the same way, i.e. both were leaning to the right, causing it to want to track left. Then the rear toe in was causing the back to push right, so that explains a lot.

Odd though, the transmission whine in 1st is louder now, like bearings, so I wonder if the slight shift in geometry is putting pressure on the rear diff, I'll see if it quietens down. About to drop my daughter for a night out at the olympics volleyball, so I'll see how it sounds this time.

Oh yeah, and a grand old cost of £120.

I know all wheel alignment is not that cheap ... had mine done a few months back for £100 after a discount at STS... however not completely 100% satisfied so will look for another place to have it redone, waiting until I get my new springs fitted first.

Theres a company called wheels in motion, they did/do specialist alignment specs for the is. They did/do have an advert somewhere on here. £120 seems like a lot fo money for wheel alignment, for front end only (as most cars only have an adjustable front end) i charge £25 and if i check it and it doesnt need adjustment i dont charge at all.

Took it to ATS first and they only do the front end, I said no good to me as felt like the rears were out. When I took it to Feltham Tyre Services they said the IS has full adjustment front and rear so the price was dependant on how much adjustment was needed, I watched the guy and he was playing around at the back for atleast 30 minutes, then about 20 on the front.

Did seem like a lot of money but had difficulty finding a place that did full geometry near me and just wanted it done for our drive to Cornwall next weekend. I tried Sunbury tyres in January on another car and they had a queue of 5 so said to come back in 2 hours, then they had a queue of 4, waited an hour and still 4, so I told them to sod off and start operating a booking system instead of wasting peoples afternoons.

Shame I didn't know about FTS then, closer and better service.

£120 is not excessive price in my eyes to be honest...

Main brand names charge like £27 per adjustment (if you look the invoice)

So it is

£27 for front toe adjustment

£27 for front camber (if it is applicable)

£27 for front caster (if it is applicable)

£27 for rear toe

+ VAT on top of those prices

An average all round laser allignment can come up to £127.00

If someone just does the front toe in toe out adjustment it will cost only £27 + VAT on most places.

I know my rear toe is out of the correct numbers as my rear adjuster bolt is seized!!! did you know Lexus quotes £50odd per side for the bolt ... only parts!

Once I have it sorted I will be able to sort out my rear as my tyres do wear un even.

Now if you think £120 ... was excessive you should have been in my shoes when I went to a Mercedes Main Dealer and asked them how much to do all round allignment on my CL500 .... eeemmm are you sitting down while you read this???

£580.00 + VAT and it should take on average 3hrs working on the car they said!!!!!!

Ofcourse never took it to them, but it gives you a hint that people do pay a lot at main "S" Dealers!

I had geometry done at F1 Autocentre on my old Lex last year and they did a cracking job, I had a long drive to cardiff and back the weeknd after and ride was much smoother afterwards ...I must say I can't remember how much it cost me without going back and checking reciepts as I had a new set of rears from them too but £120 does sound a bit steep to me just for the alignment

whhels in motion at one ppint would send you the specs to suit your car. Depeneding if your car has been lowered depends on amount of camber you need. Might be worth an ask if they will send you your suited specs and get your local place to do it save you the drive to them .

Mine was £25 per wheel.

Still excessive though, but I guess I am used to NZ, where every tyre shop has a laser wheel alignment set up, and it only costs <$100 (£50), I guess the benefit of more competition.
