Henia Bryer Speaks To John Humphreys On Her Life And The Holocaust

Did any of you hear John Humphrey's interviewing Henia Bryer yesterday morning? It was an incredibly moving interview about her life, her survival of the Holocaust and how her, and her family that remained, managed to live their lives together afterwards. Although it was extremely bleak in places, it was also, as Humphrey's said, a remarkable testimony to the human spirit.

With Holocaust day on Sunday, her documentary is being shown at 10.25pm on BBC1. Things like this should never be forgotten.

I've just been reading about her actually - I'll go and have a look at that now thanks.

It is shocking that some people don't even know it happened:

"I had an operation once and the anaesthetist comes and looks at [the tattoo on] my arm and he says, 'What is this?' And I said, 'That's from Auschwitz.' And he said, 'Auschwitz, what was that?' And that was a young man, a qualified doctor," she says.

That is sad isn't it? I've made some of my children watch her interview in the hope that they won't forget our recent history and how easily a nation can be misled.

Bit late I know, but cruising through the different threads on LOC, stumbled on this one, it took me back to my stay in the late '70's as a Volunteer on a Kibbutz in Israel, Eating in the Kibbutz canteen every day, you could find yourself seated next to one of the permanent residents, -a few of who were ageing survivors of the Concentration Camps,-evident from the fading tattoed number on their wrists, talking to them, about day to day matters concerning trivia, it was hard to imagine you were in the company of someone who had witnessed, ( and suffered) the obscene horrors of these Camps, -and survived, and carrying-on with their lives, all of them that I met had well-developed senses of humour, and a calmness that belied their experiences, most had lost entire families to this Holocaust, I often think of those people I met, and feel honoured to have met them, it's such a shame that humans don't learn from History isn't it?

Yes, you're right. We don't learn from our mistakes. Those of us with children do have a responsibility to ensure they are fully aware of the things that have gone on in our relatively recent history.
