My Front Disc Backing Plate Has Cracked And Is Hanging Off

hi has anyone ever had this problem , i could hear it chattering when going over bumps , to my inspection the disc back plate has cracked , would it hurt if i just took it off? what does it do?

anyone got one? look in my wanted ads theres a pic in there of it , cheers

Jamesy, i ripped mine off 4 weeks ago as it had rotted through and ive not had any problems yet.My sons bmw had the same thing 2 years ago and has had no problems as yet.Think it is just a dust and dirt guard.
