  1. If Lexus Stockport were doing 20 years 0% finance I'd get one too!!!! lol Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the club
  2. Not doing the filter at the moment as apparently it is a 100,000-150,000 mile replacement so no sump removal required just drain and refill 5 times to replace the majority of the fluid. There is however very bad news.... Other half decided to make some custard tonight ( very rare occurance and very ill timed) of course not having done all the changes yet the measuring jug is still in the garage and I had to confess, why couldn't we have a strawberry and chocolate muffin like last night I don't know!!!! anyway I need to wash my hair now to get the banana and custard out.
  3. The only problem you have Ruud is the 150 mile round trip on single track roads to get to and from the nearest Lexus dealer! In the last 3 weeks I have been on Mull, Skye and then Barra ( pleasant 5 hour ferry trip from Oban) just keeping you guys with an electricity supply :D
  4. You have to get them from Ebay.com rarely seen on UK Ebay. I did have the clear ones but then replaced them with smoked which match my body colour (Lexus dark Silver) great. Pity it still isn't $2 = £1 http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=lexus+ls4...r&_osacat=0
  5. Hi Matt, I suppose the worst senario is a complete replacement transmission ( Lexus Dealer method) but a transmission specialist should be able to repair the box if the parts are available. Have a look at this link http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/index...showtopic=41543 It could also be a wiring problem to the solenoids, but to access them, the transmission sump has to be removed. The code you are getting points to solenoid 5. Is the fluid level correct?
  6. No she's at work at the moment I'd better wash it well or she will suspect something if her morning poridge tastes funny
  7. Hi Rich, Welcome to the LOC. We are always glad to help. Post up some pictures when you get the chance
  8. With 100,000 KMs now achieved I have been meaning to do a transmission fluid change for some while now, it just annoyed me that in the USA I could buy 12 quarts of Toyota Type IV for a mere £26.00 but over here it has cost me £88.00 for 10 litres of the stuff and that was with a 10% discount from Sean at Lexus Derby. Anyway no good crying £88.00 compared with a duff transmission is peanuts so I bought the stuff and commenced the operation. I was going to do the flush as described on Lexls but then decided to do the sump pan drain and refill method therefore draining around 2 litres then refilling repeatedly. Up on the axle stands and armed with a 14mm ring and a suitable drain container I released then removed the bolt. As the old oil stream came out it did look a nice cherry red which at this point made me think "has this been done before I bought the car" ( being an import I had no service history dispite making many enquiries). However once I had poured it into an old plastic pop bottle to measure it accurately I was convinced that it was original as it was nearly black in colour! I think left much longer I would have had serious problems. So if anyone is "thinking" about this job DO IT! I was lucky to get away with mine but it does show the tolerance of the Lexus transmission to put up with old fluid in this state. I had no noticeable problems with the transmission with the fluid in this state it was still as smooth as silk. Just so you can gasp below is a picture showing the difference.
  9. Hi, According to the parts diagram it should just unscrew. http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_E_1995_LEXU...AEPGK_3312.html
  10. Not sure if this applies to the LS but may be worth a look http://planetsoarer.com/petrolsmell/petrolsmell.htm Also check the fuel filter/connections ( behind the rear passenger side wheel arch)
  11. It doesn't mention hammer n chizzel in the workshop manual only Ant and Dec!!!lol
  12. Hi Jeff, I have never done this myself so cannot verify the proceedure but according to the manual proceed as follows "Slide a towel between the mirror and the housing and then pull the mirror outwards at the bottom to disengage the mirror retaining clips, rotate mirror upwards to disengage the pivot pins, reassembly is the reverse" Good luck. Steve
  13. Iridium plugs are apparently the way to go now with a service life of around 100,000 miles they are almost fit and forget
  14. Hi, 20 MPG on short runs for your car is probably about correct there is a big difference with mine on local driving and a good run. As for servicing it sounds a lot of money for the interim have a look below for a link which may interest you ( I have no association with the company but just found them on a search) but cost wise it looks good. http://www.servicingstop.co.uk/lexus_servi...CFVyY2AodwSGOkQ
  15. Hello Kev, Welcome to the LOC
  16. Hi, Lower ball joints are bolt on so fairly easy to replace. Have a look at this link for the layout and part numbers. http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_E_1993_LEXU...AEPGK_4802.html
  17. Very true plus the fact that Lexus supply the toolkit in the boot as standard to be able to fix it!
  18. Just had a scary moment with the LS, went shopping then returned to the car turned the key and got the dreaded click click. The click was more pronounced than the failed contact problem I had before as you could actually hear the starter motor solenoid plunger operating and the dash lights went completely out. Embarrasingly I had to lift the bonnet in public on a Lexus and to my relief discovered a loose negative battery terminal. I am always weary of over tightening these as I have seen the post snap off batteries in the past. Using the 10mm Lexus spanner in the boot toolkit to nip up the nut I soon had the problem fixed. The battery voltage dipped so low due to the connector being loose on cranking I had to reset the clock and radio presets! Phew!!!!!!!
  19. I didn't fancy drilling holes to mount mine so I got some foam type double sided sticky pads stuck 6 on each ballast and mounted them where I could, infact one is mounted on a plastic panel and it hasn't melted yet. I think as long as they have some ventilation space around them and they are not exposed to direct water contact they are fine. According to mine they are only rated at 35 watts, a brake light bulb is 21 watts so heat shouldn't be a problem.
  20. The recommended transmission fluid for the LS400 is Toyota Type IV but mine being a 1994 presently still filled ( I assume) with type TII (according to the label on the dipstick) so I was going to do the drain and refill proceedure several times to replace the fluid but now I have read the Toyota TSB on this matter and according to this you cannot mix TII with TIV. http://dutch.northwestmr2.com/Toyota/celic...20Clutch/05.pdf What do you think?
  21. I think the only "approved" systems are from the likes of Thatcham, these systems can be bought for DIY installation but without the certificate they are not approved so need to be professionally fitted. As Redsteve says have a shop around the insurers.
  22. Hi, It should tell you this info in the cars handbook but 5w30 fully synthetic is what I use in my LS.
  23. Personally I would leave it in situ and connected, reason being there is part of the wiring that connects to the sound system mute circuit and incorrect removal could result in no more music. Also I seem to remember that the phone is analogue and therefore completely useless in today's digital age.
  24. This LS400 is presently on Ebay described as a 1995 model, the shift appears to be the Gen1 type i.e. non gated so I asked the seller to clarfiy and it is apparently registered as an M reg 1995 but I thought this model was superceeded by the Gen 2 in October 1994. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:X:RTQ:GB:1123
  25. Hi and welcome to the LOC :D I'm pretty sure this problem has come up before but I cannot for the life of me remember what the solution was, I know most of the problems on the earlier generation but this one eludes me. It could be just the backlight bulbs I know some members have replaced them with LEDs. Someone will be on here shortly who will know.
