  1. Nice clean engine bay! I also replaced many of the 10mm head bolts in the engine bay with s/steel ones - a great improvement. Managed to find s/s bolts on Ebay very similar to the originals. Also cleaned and re-painted the rad brackets but I see they are starting to rust again.
  2. Accidentally lost my security nut adapter a few weeks ago (non Lexus alloys). Fortunately I keep the studs greased and nuts torqued to the correct setting. Managed to fairly easily remove the security nuts using a slightly undersize old 12-point socket hammered on. Picked up a new set ofsecurity nuts on Ebay at around £11 which are fine. I doubt if this would work if the nuts are very tight though!
  3. Interested to hear Ormie's advice on splitting balljoints. I know that the screw type splitters can easily damage the ends of the threads, especially around the drill throughs for split-pins. Maybe the fork type splitters are better in this regard. Must try the whacking method in future!
  4. Thanks for all the great replies, very much appreciated. Problem solved using a large rubber mallet, easy when you know how!
  5. Any tips for removing IS200 rear disks without damage? They seem very reluctant to budge despite mild persuasion! Calipers are removed, handbrake is off, and discs rotate freely. Need to inspect/service handbrake shoes, etc. Thanks to all.
  6. I had a major 'cold weather problem' that is described in the (very long) thread: http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=28384&st=220&p=707185&fromsearch=1entry707185 Maybe your problem could be related to this. If you find a solution, please let us know!
  7. My rust spot is similar but on the roof just above the windscreen. Most probably a stone chip through to the metal. I would like to remove the rust before touching up with paint but not too sure how best to do it or what to use.
  8. I too would be interested to know the best treatment for a small rust spot, around 2-3mm diameter. Colour is Platinum Ice.
  9. Although the screw is a small cross-head, I found that it was not very tight and managed to remove it (with care) using a small ordinary straight blade jeweller's screwdriver. A set of these small screwdrivers is quite cheap and comes in very useful now and again.
  10. Hi posty, I'm just up the road from you and often walk past and admire your car - I really like all the mods and your new rear lights! I have the silver IS200 - saw you driving past last weekend. I have an issue with the aftermarket LED tail lights on mine and will have to cut open the units to find out what the problem is. The following thread gives the details: http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t62468.html I am interested in your experience in cutting open the units (I have a Dremel, etc.) We must have a chat sometime and compare notes!
  11. Thanks again E910. My conclusion is that I should use Redline MT90 75w-90 GL4 in the gearbox, and Redline 75w-90 GL5 in the diff.
  12. Thanks to all for the recommendations. I was wanting to move up from the squeezy bottles I have used in the past and have decided to invest in a Hilka suction pump. I was in fact intending to use Redline MT-90 - I have an MX5 to do at the same time so just needing to work out the total quantity needed for both gearboxes and back-axles and then look around for the best price delivered. Expensive stuff and not very many stockists! May wait for one of the free delivery opportunities from Opie Oils.
  13. Thanks for the recommendation true blue, I will have a look at this item. I saw the limited clearance for the level plug in a photograph but had forgotten about it - I will need a ring spanner as well!
  14. Can anyone recommend a cheap hand pump to fill the IS200 gearbox? I take it that something like the Draper 43904 Syphon Pump will not pump up to a higher level but only start a syphon operation down to a lower level. Thanks to all.
  15. Thanks for the software suggestions flyeris. Are these 'free' or bought versions, or ....erm, otherwise obtained?
  16. I might also be interested in one of these adapters which connects a laptop to the OBD2 socket. The popular ELM chips are simply programmed Microchip PIC microcontrollers and are marketed by a Canadian company, Elm Electronics. The recent version of their chip has been 1.3a but I note that version 1.4 is now available. The following ELM Electronics webpage gives the information: http://elmelectronics.com/new.html I still don't know what best software to run on the laptop - any views on this?
  17. Welcome to the world of Lexus & LOC! There is no switch, it comes on when the boot lid is opened. Thats if you are talking about the small 501 bulb that sits in the basket inside the boot? That's interesting. I couldn't see a switch either - does anyboby know what switches the boot light on?
  18. I found that the complete MOT Inspection Manual can be viewed here: http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m3i00000001.htm Only one page can be downloaded and viewed at a time, but still very useful. Has anyone managed to find the complete manual anywhere as a single file, e.g. a .pdf for easy printing? Alternatively, the complete manual can be purchased for around £28.
  19. The recent spells of ice and snow exposed the following hazard. When opening the boot lid covered in ice, the ice slid off onto the rear window, then promptly slid off the window, dropped through the gap between the lid and the window, and neatly filled the boot with ice! A moment's thought would obviously avoid this but it was remarkably easy to fall into this trap.
  20. From what I understand, you may need to use one of the OBD2 code readers/testers to reset the light. I am thinking of getting one of the type that provide an interface to a laptop, such as currently at: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT
  21. Thanks for letting us know your experience with this flyeris. I have been thinking for a while that it might be useful to be able to read OBD2 codes. What particular software have you found to be good with this unit?
  22. My experience has been similar to whiteman - no problem with the headlight relay. Removed some of the lower plugs in the driver's footwell relay board and replaced them after heating with a hairdryer and a spray with WD40. Still OK after 3 weeks now - but confidence in the car has been badly shaken! The problem seems to have been linked to the extreme cold weather.
  23. Look in the owners handbook, you can use a range of oils (5w-30, 10w-40, fully-synthetic, semi-synthetic etc) Thanks Kam05. Yes, I did read this spec from the Owner's Handbook. But in terms of the Castrol Edge oils Castrol advise the use of 0W-30 for the IS200. I think I read somewhere that going to fully synthetic can mean a slight change in the grade - I wonder if this might be the reason. If I were to use Castrol Edge, any comments on using 0W-30, as advised by Castrol, rather than, say 5W-30?
  24. An interesting thread. On the Castrol Edge website there is a facility: "Find the Right Oil for Your Car" - just enter your reg no and click GO. http://www.castrol.com/castrol/castrolhome...categoryId=3205 The recommended Castrol Edge for the IS200 is 0W-30, and not 5W-30 as I mostly see here? However, I don't know what climate temperature range this is based on, but this recommendation comes from the Castrol UK/Ireland site. Any thoughts...........
  25. Thanks Rez89, In that case I must have a look under the rubbers to see if I can spot the edge of the tinting film.
