  1. tinka, some of the 250 owners love knocking the 220 but the fact of the matter is the 250 has had to have engine out and the top end rebuilt.i don't recall reading about owners of 220's telling stories of engine rebuilds. I've never heard of this before? Can you give an example where this has happened? knitware, type in engine top end rebuild at the search function and this will give you info, the 250 lovers like to keep it quiet you know.

  3. twin exhausts do look great, stick with the 220 and give the 250 a wide birth and you won't have the expense of rebuilding the top end of the engine, lol.
  4. The link below I copied from the Toyota forum and thought it would be most useful for any 220 owners that are out of warranty that suspect they may have EGR problem. http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.p...howtopic=106241 A nice little cash saver I think!
  5. discs are covered under warranty, mine were replaced by lexus leicester free of charge you should only be charged for the part price of the pads.i think that there maybe some dealers getting paid by lexus for the disc warranty work and then charging the customer as well.
  6. Hey Col I can understand your feelings on buying a 220d after reading the threads regarding the various issues. Mine has, I think it's fair to say, been probably one of the worst in the UK and frankly I'm extremely hacked off about it even though it's a company car. The aim of my posts about the issues I've had has been to inform other owners of potential pitfalls (and to perhaps have a rant) not to scare people like yourself over their purchases. It would genuinely trouble my conscience if, knowing the sh*t I've been through, another owner suffered a worst fate than the near misses I've had through ignorance of the potential problems. Look at it this way, you know what to look for if the car ever miss-behaves. I guess I've been unlucky with mine, doesn't mean you'll be!! Good luck and happy ownership!! PS - I still think the IS looks waaaaaay better than the BMW etc german competitors.... although not quite as nice as the Scirocco that's being built this week for delivery to me in about 3-4 weeks time!! it is strange how cars are visually polarising,my view on the scirocco is that it looks just like a squashed golf whereas my 220 looks as fresh as the day that i bought it and you can't say that about many cars four years on.
  7. I got the nasty crack noise from the dash, and a funny vibration/nose at 1500 rpm. I'll take it back to the Toyota Dealer I bought it from as Lexus Aberdeen are closing down (worse luck). Other than that I'm now a happy bunny. Col... :winky: the crack noise,re-fitting of the radio cures that one, have you got more info about the vibration. To me it sounds as if it's maybe the turbo trying to kick in or out??? You can feel the vibration if you touch the rear view mirror. It's not a terrible vibration, it just concerns me coz I don't know if it is serious or not???? Col... are you refering to the mirror vibration when in sixth gear at low rpm's.
  8. it might be useful if you live in the saharabut this is england and waterless car wash is not required, lol.
  9. Yes, that sounds like it. But how do you mean "tyre stepping out"? If you get someone to watch the front wheel as you reverse in full lock with cold tyres you will see that the wheel/tyre 'skids' about 1/2" at a certain point and this is the bang and judder - mine was more often on the front left tyre. hello, i seem unsure as to what is being said, is this an actual fault or simply nothing to worry about, will changing the tyre's sort this out? just curious incase this happens to my car not to worry, there is no fault only the tyres stepping out,if you have had front wd vehicles prior to your lex they do not have such a tight turning circle and step out is less noticeable.
  10. they will not sell a car to anybody at all because the problem is so huge.a little ironic that the model is called blue efficiency.
  11. gunter, the bmw should be better in every respect as like for like it is far more expensive, the difference was £7k when i bought.i don't beleive it is £7k better and i here that bmw are also having injector problems as are mercedes.
  12. That's obviously why their diesels lost the 2009 Le Mans then after having won the 2006, 2007 and 2008 races.(Not to mention the Audi Diesel's similar success at the 12 hour Sebring races). well it's easy to win a race when there are no serious competitors.then of course one competitor comes along for 2009 and beats audi easily, and to rub salt in the wound it was a peugot, lol.
  13. I'm a bit miffed that they haven't been in touch with me. Two bits of news then and I don't think either come as a surprise. Regarding the 220d there seem to have been less complaints about the later models or is it that todays owners are not as vocal as jamboo? It wasn't has if they contacted me personally, just in discussion with the Sales and Service guys in my local dealership. We all know Lexus only introduced the 220D for the fleet market, and going by the number of them I see on the motorways, I'd say they have succeeded somewhat. Unfortunately the development of the diesel for the second generation IS didn't get the same attention as the 250/350. I'm sure they have sorted out (most?) of the problems, but as they consider hybrid technology to be the future they're not going to pour money into developing the diesel, especially as BMW and Audi have such a lead. tango,i think you will find that audi are some three years behind as common rail engines and piezo fuel injectors are only recent additions to audi.well behind the game imo.
  14. i have come across this piece of information,it is a 26 page thread about the experiences of merc c220/250 and e250 vehicles known as blue effeciency. tango, you will be eating your words after reading this http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/7705...tor-recall.html you will be happy that you bought the lexus.

  16. a little tip, next time you are at the petrol station pick up one of the free polythene gloves, wear the glove when feeling for contamination on the body panels and you will be surprised at how the glove heightens your sense of touch.
  17. yes, that's exactly the thing to do and prefferably on a steep hill climb,i believe this method is called italian tuning.
  18. most of the dealers put semi-synthetic 5w 30,i don't think that brand name is important as long as the oil is of api standard.
  19. col,my 220 has covered over 63k miles and has been 100% reliable, some owners have had reliability issues which largely relate to the egr and emmisions system, these problems are not specific to lexus as all diesels that have dpf systems have a build up of carbon deposits that build up over time.if your cycle of use is largely urban then i would say that you have bought the wrong car but if you do longer journeys then you will be fine.btw, the AA advise drivers of vehicles with dpf's to use premium diesel every third tank to keep carbon deposits lower,i use millers dps4 in every tank as an alternative to premium diesel
  20. i have recently bought some wilkinsons tyre shine,it costs £1.99 and is in a sray can.i put two coats on and when completely dry gives a new tyre look and not shiney as the description on the can.the product has been on for six weeks now and is not showing signs of fading away and it also repels dirt and water,it is the best tyre dressing that i have used.
  21. Any change in consumption? there has been no change one way or another in fuel consumption just an increase in mid range power and no trouble after 20k miles,my avg mpg is 42-43 with combined cycle use.ps,i had a slight hesitation on acceleration a while ago, this was cured in 15mins by my mechanic who cleared out some soot build up below the egr valve.
  22. i use the carlack system which is long lasting and will give complete protection against etching from bird waste.available at cleanyourcar.co.uk.there are application guides as well, the nice thing about the product is that no white dust whilst buffing off.
  23. i have been using a spider tuning box for about a year now without issues.the unit does work with pwer improvements in the mid range but no significant change at sub turbo revs.
