  1. Hi. That's very expensive for an exhaust, does it all need changing? It seems the obvious thing to do then is to have an exhaust made from the recommendations above.
  2. When you trade in your car, the Lexus dealer will remember that it is one from the generation that had the problems - but the new one of course will be made after everything has been sorted. Yet another tool to keep the margin up between buying and selling. It will be like that until another manufacturer is singled out. "When you trade in your car, the Lexus dealer will remember that it is one from the generation that had the problems" What problems?? Anyway, I don't understand this worry, please don't blow this out of proportion like the press are enjoying doing. The problem is with a part within a Toyota which is to be replaced. The problem isn't with e.g. gearbox's or engines blowing up randomly across the whole of Toyota/ Lexus cars, or cars igniting killing thousands across the world. It's a 'potential' problem like the Lexus had with the break callipers. This is all silly media hype and Toyota will still be the worlds No1 car manufacturer when the press run out of coverage with this news. I can't see there being an issue come trade in time.
  3. Erm, I think I would fail, I'd like to try it on a track though! Ooh, the GS looks angry!
  4. I know that this should go into the video section but I thought that GS owners should be able to see if they too can copy this! ----: )-----
  5. Hello, I would always go with the manufactures recommended antifreeze and I wouldn't deviate. To quote from my owners manual: Use of improper coolants may damage your engine cooling system. Only use "Toyota Super Long Life Coolant" or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine and non-borate coolant with long life hybrid organic acid technology. "Toyota Super Long Life Coolant" is a mixture of 50% coolant and 50% deionized water. I also found this in an Honest John artical: For many years, since the demise of Methanol based antifreeze that was traditionally only added just before winter, blue/green or yellow Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) has been the mainstay of the coolant market. However Ford vehicles since 08/98 have been filled with coolant combining Monoethylene glycol with Organic Additive Technology (OAT) corrosion inhibitors. There are important differences between standard MEG and MEG with OAT. It does not contain silicates, nitrates, nitrites, borates, phosphates or amines so that: · Without silicates, silicate gel or "green goo" does not form. · By eliminating phosphates, hard water scale is reduced. · Without silicates, phosphates, nitrates, nitrites and borates, abrasive dissolved acids are greatly reduced thereby diminishing water pump seal failures. · Without amines and nitrites, there is no potential formation of nitrosamines. All of this results in a considerably longer life span, whilst providing improved protection of all cooling system metals, including aluminium. Benefits over conventional silicate based coolants are: · Improved water pump life due to reduced water pump seal wear. · Fewer abrasive dissolved solids. · Reduced hard water scale. · Virtually no deterioration of heat transfer capacity during service life. · Excellent protection against high temperature and pitting corrosion. · No silicate gel formation during storage or use. · Effective long-term corrosion protection for aluminium, brass, cast iron, steel, solder and copper alloys. · Long effective service life of up to 10 years or 150,000 miles. I didn't think that coolant could be so technical! Anyway, I would change to the red stuff!
  6. If your car was written off in 2006 how can it be recalled, surely it was scrapped.
  7. ahh good point, having killed a GS this way I feel strongly about it. It would be interesting to find out how the conversion went and associated problems. I wonder if he's still on here?
  8. Thanks for the clarification.... However you and I both know that any plate is only worth what someone will pay for it, however like many commodities that have no use, there will always be someone who will pay for the perceived prestige of individuality. So no I'm not saying that a plate off an old car is worthless, but other than the way that a reg plate identifies a motor car, it is pretty pointless. You sound bitter about this plate business. Are you sore because you can't afford a 'private' plate?
  9. i have seen one aristo MK2 for sale which i really really fancy. so hoping to sell mine and buy this aristo. only reason im selling my car is to buy this aristo but i am not desperate to sell my car and not desperate to buy this aristo. i will let my car go only if i get my asking price but i have got this funny feeling that no body is gona offer me that sort of money :) I think it looks a fair price considering the quality of your car. Good luck with the sale!
  10. On a vehicle of this age he is taking a risk. I would want full service history, not some and receipts to prove. If he bought a car like this a problem could occur making the fix likely to cost in excess of the £1000 he paid for the car. I would hold off and save the money. If he can wait and save a bit more cash he could pick up a car with FSH and perhaps a bit newer, check piston heads. I know they can be expensive considering the purchase price, but an AA check (about £150) could foretell problems and save £1000s'. Does he really need a GS now?
  11. tinka, some of the 250 owners love knocking the 220 but the fact of the matter is the 250 has had to have engine out and the top end rebuilt.i don't recall reading about owners of 220's telling stories of engine rebuilds. I've never heard of this before? Can you give an example where this has happened?
  12. My GS300 is at around 1600rpm at 60, just under 1900rpm at 70................ Sorry, this doesn't help in finding statistics but I thought I'd add to the fun.
  13. Hi Tony! My father in law has a 54 reg Mercedes E-class for sale. He's had it since new and has very low mileage. He said that he'd sell it to me cheap. It's in his drive at the moment as he's one of those lucky folk who didn't need to trade it in before he bought his M-class! I'm not sure if I should sell my car, it's just with the problems that I've had it's just peeing me off and I feel like I'm waiting for another fault to appear at any time. I'm hoping that the car will behave, then again I feel that I shouldn't have to worry about an expensive Japanese car breaking down, I thought that was the whole idea about Lexus, the reliability.
  14. I think that it could have been flooding as it was ok this morning. I haven't had the problem before and with me starting it and switching it off within a few seconds the day before I think I will put it down to flooding, hopefully!
  15. This makes sense too! If it starts ok in the morning then I think it must have been flooded from the night before. It has run all day and started ok since this morning.
  16. Hi, my 300 Sportcross does exactly this if I shunt it about in our yard and switch off before she gets any real heat into the engine. I am told it is caused by not enough oil pressure in the hydraulic tappets but when trying to start it does sound like little or no compression, no sure if the V6 suffers this like the straight 6 but it does sound rough when it starts till it settles down so if I have to move it I let it idle from cold before switching off, a common problem with Toyota engines I am told. May be barking up the wrong tree but worth a mention Tony Hi, you may have hit the nail on the head. The night before I started it to move a foot then turned it off. I'll see what's it like in the morning. Thanks for that.
  17. Anyway, I think I've had enough of this. How much do you have to spend to get relaiability. I thought buying a Toyota/Lexus was going to be a worry free ownership experiance........ Who wants a car..................
  18. I went to start my car this morning and it wouldn't start! The symptoms were: It was spinning up ok but just wouldn't fire. After about 3 goes it fired up but sounded lumpy, like one of the cylinders wasn't firing. I revved it and then all was ok. I took it for a drive and it started ok after that. Could it be one of the leads on the way out? Do these cars have the coil at the end of the HT lead? Anybody know the cost of these? Anyone in a Mk3 GS had this problem? Thanks!
  19. MMmmm..! OK, having read the article, it seems a cut & dried case!, no real harm done and only damage to the two cars. As we know, this could of been a lot worse but thankfully all involved are ok. A nice fat cheque rom Greg to the family would of been nice! (maybe they did get one, hence 'No reply' & 'drawn a line under the incident' from the family!!!!) It's nice to know that my car will be ok in a 40mph front crash!!
  20. I hate it when people don't indicate. It's the most lazy thing you can do and suggests a total disregard for other folk and displays ignorance and bad attitude. I would fine people for this. How hard is it to flip a pinky to show intention. Another thing, if it's not foggy, turn your f...... fog lights off!
  21. Hello, it's me the OP! I can't believe you dug this up as I was just thinking about this literally 10 mins ago! How odd! Anyway, the problem hasn't appeared since. I do remember this though, the car did want to keep going, I remember it well, it was quite scary. I had the ECU changed, other reasons, and the lurching/driving forward hasn't happened since, even during our recent spell of snow. I wonder if this could be the same problem Toyota are suffering? In my case it was very unnerving, I had the foot off the accelerator and the car wanted to keep going. My wife was in the car at the time and asked, well shouted, 'what are you doing?'. I wasn't doing anything, I had to stamp on the brakes very hard, the ABS came on!!! This is quite worrying in light of the current situation. I assure you my foot was off the accelerator but the car was accelerating forward!
  22. I saw the channel 4 news and it played the moments of the telephone conversation leading up to the crash that killed this guy and his family in the USA. Apparently his accelerator was stuck. What I can't figure out is if he had time to make a call why could he not ram the car into neutral, stamp on the brakes, switch the ignition off, drive into a field. I know he must have panicked but the last thing I would do if my accelerator was stuck open is phone the cops! Back on topic. Toyota and Lexus do share common parts. It's a bit worrying but I have never heard of an accelerator pedal sticking open on its own. I've heard of carpets getting stuck under the pedal and this causing problems. On the GS there are carpet hooks though. Interesting topic this. I wonder if Lexus will be involved. From what I've heard All the mention does not work once its jammed the brakes hand brskes only slow it down until its burnt out the engin does not cut off, there was another incident can't remeber what make of car it was, luckily he was on a freeway and he drove until he ran out off fuel, lucky guy It's interesting this. I want to know what to do 'if' the throttle sticks open. Are there any brave people out there who want to do some testing? For example, can the car be put into neutral at 70 mph? Can the car be switched off? Please don't try these things! However, there must have been testing of some sort that can answer these questions. I know someone within LOC has pressed the stop/start button while on the move 'to prove' that the engine will cut out. This is very bad for Toyota.
  23. Winter tyres are a rarity in the UK, just takes caution plus the main roads should be gritted. This could happen to anyone driving any car. Glad your ok, you must have papped yourself! The repairs were an amazing turnaround too!
